I have a nice old wood heating insert that was in the house that I don't use. I also have a bunch of 1" thick heat bricks that lined the outside. Would this make a good forge? Or should I make a more simple version with something else. Just looking for an easy DIY forge for home. Thanks.

What kind of forge? Gas or coal? I don't think the wood heater would be the way to go for either. A gas forge works better with a round pipe and ceramic insulation, fire brick doesn't work as well. A good coal forge can be made from a wash tub and wood ash as the refractory.

I'm leaning more towards the coal forge as it will take less material to make, and have most on hand.
