Here's the deal:

My dirty secret is out, and my family now knows that I own a khuk or two. They're so shocked and appalled, that my Mom is now thinking (however casually) about whether an HI product would be a good gift for a friend.

Since we certainly can't do it NOW, money being as tight as it is, I thought of a DIY blade, maybe for one of the smaller knives (e.g. R-series, Bagh Marne, Bowies, etc.) They're heavy into Native American art, and they could either......

A) have one of their artist friends make a handle, or....
B) dig into their catalog from Crazy Crow Trading Post, get some handlemaking supplies, and put one on themselves.

In either case, they'd probably need to know about what would fit. Do any current and/or former DIY-ers recall whether HI blades tend to come with round or square tangs, or how wide they are?

P.S. I'm fairly enthusiastic about this idea, since I dabble in leatherwork, and might be able to contribute by making a sheath....

Here is what an H.I. WWII looks like:

Each khukuri is different, therefore each tang is different, but they are all beefy. It is best to pick the blade and then fit the hardware and handle to it. The thing is, these type of offerings are only offered when Auntie has a khuk or two that have handles that are unrepairable. You can always ask if she has any, or buy a blem and redo the handle.

I remember years ago asking Uncle Bill about getting a bare blade, he told me that yes I could special order one but it would end up costing me almost as much as a completed knife, things may have changed since then, but buying a blem and reworking it might be the way to go.

Just wondering where these things came from: people really seem to enjoy working on them.

That about answers it; thanks.
