I've began toying with the idea of picking up a Mora, probably a craftsman, but those sheaths don't look like they would hold up to jack shit. So I'm thinking if I did get one I'd make a simple leather sheath for it, the type that are made from 1 piece of leather and just wrap around the knife.

Now, I have no leather tools or supplies, but are there any kits out there with decent leather, thread, and a needle at the very least? Fancy is the last thing on my mind, I just want practical and economic.

I have checked out Tandy Leather, but the only fixed blade sheath kit they offer seems a little large and inappropreit for a mora (http://www.tandyleather.com/products.asp?number=4105-00).

The sheaths I got when I bought my Mora's were a joke , at best. So I went to a local leather craft shop , bought some leather , needles , thread and some various stamps and punches and went to work.
I am at work and do not have a pic but I made one up in a few hours , does not look too bad and it certainly better than the plastic junk that came with my Mora's.
I did use the original sheath as a model , also looked at what some other folks have made up on here.

I know exactly what I want to make, but I just don't know of any leather shops in this area, don't want any extra tooling (not looking to decorate) and looking for low-cost, decent quality supplies.

I used the plastic sheath, cut off the belt loop and formed a leather sheath around the original plastic sheath, creating a nice liner for the leather sheath, made a leather loop in place of the plastic one. Turned out so nice that I plan to do this to all of my Mora blades.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea, Iuke. How much leather did you use and what weight/thickness?

Sounds Interesting, I've been eager to pick up some leather for some time and try my hand at forming sheaths and holsters.

I normally work with KYDEX sheet for sheaths, but there are certain applications where leather would be preferable.

Does anyone have a good Online source for leather work and instruction?

Thanks!

I used 6-7 oz leather because that's what I had on hand, but since you are wrapping the ridgid plastic sheath, you could get away with something much thinner, say 3-4 oz. Here is a quick shot, sorry for the quality.
