A guy told me the other day about a woodworker he knows who does his own stabilization in his kitchen. Apparently, he boils his wood in oil and then in wax. When it comes out it's indestructible, says my source. Anybody heard of this? Is there any kind of trick to it?

You would have to compare oil and wax vs acrylic to see which is 'indestructable'. Boiling will not match vacuum as far as getting deep into the wood.

This isn't much different than the home Minwax treatments. It might not rot or soak up water, but it ain't stabilized.Oil and wax treatments (basically French polish) take a good shine, but tend to absorb every oily/dirty substance like sweat, grease, deer fat and blood.....I would think it would make a real poor work knife. The shine will get dull quickly, too.
