Hey guys new to the forum, I already own a couple of spydercos but want to get a PM2 how well does the dlc black coating hold up on the blade for an edc knife?

My black Southard is still mint. It's about a year and a half old and used as an EDC blade.

The coating is Tungsten Diamond Like Carbon (Tungsten Carbide). It is used in other applications to make cutting tools, drill bits, etc. It has an HRC (hardness Rockwell C scale) of 72. This is way harder than most knife blades, which are in the 60 HRC range.

DLC will impress you with it's durability. It sure as hell has impressed me.

I have seen a DLC Para2 with scratches on it, and it took a lot of very harsh use to do it, way beyond what would be called any reasonable EDC use. See here:

By comparison, here is mine, this has been carried and used quite a lot over the last few years for more 'normal' EDC use.

Honestly, based on my experience, you can buy Spyderco DLC with confidence.

If you're used to cheaper "Teflon" coatings, DLC will impress you. It's really hard and tough. You may think you scratch it, but it's really the DLC scratching the other material and leaving residue on the coating. When it does wear it does so gracefully, not the flaking that cheaper coatings do.
