DLC coating vs a penny

Beware of lose change in your pocket, more likely pennies. They will ruin a DLC coating . Will post pics later

Depends on what you mean by "ruin." They'll mark it up really nicely, yes, however it's more so that the DLC coating is ruining your pennies. The copper coating of the penny is softer than the hardened coating on the blade. It's actually harder than anodized aluminum, as I've had the black scales of a Leatherman Squirt take off some copper from loose change (as well as some keys later on).

I've cut an aluminum can with a DLC blade. I thought it was scratched, but after a week the aluminum scrapings were gone (rubbed off by other materials like cardboard and wood), the coating was still intact.

Post is pointless without pics.

I don't think you define "ruin" the way the rest of us do. What knife is this and are you sure it is actually DLC? Sharp teeth from keys can scratch through regular black coating but without effort would hardly make a mark on DLC. I suspect your DLC still works just the way it was intended to and is not ruined at all. Maybe it has some copper streaks on it because it is harder than the soft copper of your pennies. That should in no way impact the effectiveness of the DLC in protecting the blade from corrosion as the marks would be limited to cosmetic marks at the surface. They will likely rub off with a little bit of effort like buffing with a rag. If you are concerned that it no longer looks perfectly pretty and not actually intending to use the knife, why are you carrying it in your pocket with loose change in the first place? If you want it to look nice, put it in a safe and don't use it. If you are going to use it, then don't worry about minor cosmetic issues.

I feel a disturbance in the force as if somewhere in the world there was a man that looks like Robert De Niro rolling his eyes and cursing without knowing why the sudden urge has come over him.

Well I was using ruin as a figure of speech, and yes I do use my knives. I was just saying how I had some loose pennies in my pocket and it scuffed up a three day old knife. But thanks for the info

If taken a screw driver to a user DLC knife I have to see how it would hold up and I could barely get it to mark it up at all. DLC can take a beating for sure..I'd take some polish/cleaner and clean it up...I use pennies on my knifes to remove rust and marks so I'm sure the pennies would hurt DLC like stated.. The Company who does DLC Ionbond does some amazing things with it.

I don't think you know what a figure of speech is.

Sorry for jumping on you. People are a bit testy, or I am, because all of the "OMFG! This knife sucks! PONIES!" posts are part of why we no longer get good information here and have to wait until someone reposts the info from Twitter or other forums and it is hard to find good information now. I didn't mean to take it out on your personally and I apologize for that. I hope you are enjoying your knife otherwise. Please let us know what knife you have and what things you like about it. You'll usually find a much better reaction when you say "I really like this knife. My favorite things are X and Y and Z. I'm noticing this P that might be an issue, is that normal?"

I think you are thinking you used "ruin" in a hyperbolic sense but that was not clear.
Let me throw out some alliteration and sibilance here for you as an example of figures of speech and to entertain myself.

Our former fearless leader has left the forums for forever. Sorry samurai your this knife sucks speech when it was just scuffed was sort of stupid. People get pissed about posts presented like that. Keep figures of speech clear from the context so we can consider your concerns.

Try a product called Never Dull (its a metal polish that comes on a wool batting in a silver can) and a mircofiber cloth. This stuff takes most of the 'marks' right off the DLC coating on my ZT 0350. The photos of the blade are after using it to process a good bit of cardboard to a manageable size and prying (yes I said prying) open a couple of stuck window screens.

It's amazing how someone can read your mind and speak your thoughts and opinions for you, but again thanks for the info, I wasn't saying the knife sucks. It was and still is my favorite knife, guess that's why I bought more than one, or is it. I'll leave that for my corrector to answer. Thanks

Are you going to post pictures? What knife is this? I'm curious and would like to see.

You have 2 of them even and one gets some minor scuffing on the blade and it appeared by the words "beware" and "ruin" that that was of significant concern to you. If you weren't meaning to make the implication that the DLC sucks, then what was the point of your post exactly? If not trying to emphasize the weakness of the DLC, then why the hyperbole and the use of the word "ruin"? Was it a figure of speech, and if so what was the intended implication made by your hyperbole, or if not a figure of speech was it actually ruined?

I apologized for jumping on you over what I thought you were intending to imply with your post and explained why. No need to be passive aggressive.

I'm glad you like it enough to own 2. I'd still love to see or at the very least know what knife it is. Throw some pics up in a new thread and let's abandon this thread and start over since this one got nasty. As I said, I'm sorry for that. If you can't accept an apology, then I don't know what you want here but let's move on.
