Hello all,

I have a Spyderco Sharpemaker, but I been wanting to get into freehand. I'm not sure what size stones I need to best learn how to freehand. Yesterday I found a deal on the DMT 3 diamond stone kit that comes in the cherry wood box. The stones are course, fine, and extra fine (blue, red, green) and are the 6x2 size. I only have folders and do not have any big fixed blades and probably never will.

Is this a good kit, and is there anything that this kit lacks and is the 6x2 a good size to freehand on.

Thanks,

The kits on sale for 69.99

Those are the three grits I use with good results. Although I use 10" x 4" duo sharp plates.

6" stones are certainly big enough for smaller knives, but I do prefer the standard 8" sizes over a 6". Once you learn how to freehand sharpen you will never go back. That seems like a good price, but I haven't priced out any DMT's for a while...

Thanks for the resposes,

I think I'm going to get it. To buy all stones in individual boxes would run $140for the 6 inch, and $200+ for a set of 8x3.

I'm glad I took back the set I bought in the summer. 70 bucks is alot better than 150.

Thanks again.

Did you ever get that set?

If you did, what do you think about the size. I am thinking of buying some 6x2 DMT dia-sharp stones but I am afraid they may be too small. I will be sharpening folding knives as well as kitchen knives.

If you're going to be sharpening bigger knives (with > 4", I'd say), then you should probably get bigger stones. I got one 11.5" x 2.5" stone, and I think it is the best size. Eventually I will end up replacing my 6x2 stones with the 11.5 x 2.5 stones; they're worth it.
