Hey guys I am about to get a DMT aligner kit and I've heard good reviews but I wanted to know what you guys thought. I also want to know the best way to break in the extra extra fine stone since I heard it takes a while. I read somewhere to rub the extra fine and extra extra fine stones together but I'm not sure. Another one of my concerns is how large of a knife can I sharpen with this? It looks small but I wouldn't know. Thanks

I just got it few days back and I am pretty happy with the results. Mine did not come with the extra-extra-fine but the green extra fine did a good job getting most of my knives to hair splitting sharpness.

I have read that with use the stones will break in but I do not see any issues right from the first knife i sharpened. I have used it on blades 12 inch long maximum so that is for sure doable.

wow that answers most of my questions thanks, do you find it really easy? and by hair splitting what do you mean, like shaving arm hair, or whittling hair,?

I've had an aligner for over 10 years. i just have the extra fine (green) stone. You can whittle hair with the edges produced. But, I feel it's real forte is re-profiling. Profile a blade to sub 30 degrees, then resharpen with a sharpmaker at 30 and you have a great system to make and keep blades sharp with minimal fuss. Of course, if you sharpen sub 30 on the aligner, and strop as needed, you can have wickedly sharp edges, but it takes more time. Tape coated blades, as you can scratch coatings with the clamp. I never conditioned a stone.

Is there an extra extra fine (8k) grit stone that comes with the aligner?

Mine came with one:

note: Super Special Bonus pack includes a W4EE extra fine sharpener at no charge
For the stone separately:

Unfortunately my aligner only came with course, fine, extra fine & bonus extra extra fine. I'll have to buy an extra course and maybe even an extra extra course for when I want to reprofile. I will probably grab a curved stone for sharpening knives with a recurve as well.
