Question:

When moving the hone while attached to the guide rod, I notice that as I move the blade toward the end of the hone, the rod does not stay planted on the hole it fits into on the angle adjustment pole, it basically just floats in the air there. I have just been using the weight of the knife to move it back and forth on the hone.

Do I need to be pulling up (and therfore down on the very edge of the blade) so that the guiderod is always pushing up against the inside of the square hole on the angle adjustment pole, or should I press down instead?

It just seems to me if the rod is not fully touching either the top or bottom of that hole in the angle adjuster, that it won't be keeping a fixed angle.

The directions for this thing suck.

Also, does changing where you place the clamp on the knife change the angle?

Can anyone assist?

I would think moving it up or down while it's on the rod wouldn't change the angle much. I like to have a thin edge though, so I tilt the handle down, so the rod is against the top of the square. Yes, changing the position of the clamp does change the angle.

Don't worry about the angle as long as the rod is in the guide. There is a learning curve though. I suggest putting a piece of masking tape on the spot on the spine where you put the clamp on the prevent movement.Just keep checking the edges and use the sharpie trick.
