Hey All,
I recently purchased a DMT aligner and have put a few nice edges on some of my less expensive knives. The reason I bought the aligner in the first place was for a Queen knife I picked up in D2 that was just eating up my Sharpmaker. Long story short I'm trying to sharpen a very small/slim pen blade and I can't get the aligner clamp to stay on the blade. I don't know if it just the geometry of the blade or if it's just too small but I can't get it to clamp on. Anyone had this issue or know of a way I can resolve it? Thanks.

What I have done is:
  • Tighten (or loosen) the screw in the Aligner clamp hinge until the jaws are parallel and just barely accept the spine of your blade.
  • Insert the blade into the clamp as far as you can without getting the jaws in the path of your stones.
  • Holding that position (with your third hand :)) tighten the clamp wheel until the blade is firmly held.
  • Check to be sure the blade did not get tilted to one side or the other; adjust as needed to be sure you get equal bevels.
This was a field expedient. At home I think I would stack a few toothpicks between the spine of the blade and the hinge (where we usually rest the spine of larger blades).

Hope that helps;
Steve

Is it a Country Cousin? I clamped in and sharpened up mine with the Aligner and didn't encounter any problems. If it is a CC Sodbuster then there's a problem, with either the device or your use of it (no offence intended).

With any knife in the DMT Aligner, especially smaller, thinner blades, I find it very important to make sure the copper (?) screw is tightened down as much as possible before the plastic knob screw is adjusted.

Nope not a CC, it's the super small pen blade on this #46

Put some masking tape on the area of the blade your clamp jaws are holding on to.

Ahhhhh, clearly! Thank you sir and thanks all, much appreciated.
