Hey guys I got my two DMTs today and they're nice. The coarse/extra coarse is working out really well, but I can't say the same for the fine/extra fine. The extra coarse sets the edge beautifully, but once I go to the fine/extra fine the edge looks terrible. It looks like I've been changing angles every minute, but I know I am not.there isn't one straight line after I use those stones. Does it do this because thwy need to be worn in? fve just been using the coarse/extra and then stropping which has provided good results but I want a polished edge.

Most stones need a break in period to remove the topmost layer of material. I don't own any Dia-sharps but my Norton stones all started out way coarser than the grit labels would lead you to believe.

I rub them together or attack the surface with an old kitchen cleaver to break in new stones.

The diamonds require a lot of breaking in . I've not noticed it as much on my Norton crystolon and India stones compared to the diamond . But I'm sure they all need it . DM

Use a cheap kitchen knife (the bigger the better) and grind on the surface of each stone, you want to contact as much of the surface as possible hence the big knife. Working on each stone for about an hour should give you a good start at breaking them in.

light pressure

What about DMT's advice to rub them together? Would that work? Getting an Aligner sometime soon (thanks to you knifeknut:D) and would like to work this out:)

DMT has 6 plates made up of 2 sets of 3, coarse and fine. You have to use the plates in progressive order when lapping meaning you can lap the EEF with the EF but you cannot lap the EEF with the F. I have only lapped the EEF and EF together and all others have been broke-in from sharpening. Holding the stones under running water and with extremely light pressure rub the stone in a circular motion for 5 seconds at a time. I only lapped them 3 or 4 times because I was worried about damaging them. The OP does not have the option for lapping because the ones you would need to rub together are on the same stone.

For further info please contact DMT they are very helpful and will answer in detail any questions on the subject.

Used correctly these plates will bring you results you will shake your head in disbelief, used incorrectly you will probably be looking for a different stone set.

Could you lap with a softer stone, other than DMT diamond so as to not damade the DMT stone you are trying to break in?

You're absolutely correct that fresh out of the package that fine stone acts like a medium to coarse arkansas.
I generally break in a new diamond stone by reworking the edge on something that's in really bad shape -- like a kitchen knife, machete, or axe. After that it gives me a very nice polished edge.
the idea of rubbing 2 different diamond stones together makes me cringe. (even if it is an acceptable practice)

hmm very good to know. I've broken them in for the most part, but they still have some breaking in to do. The knives I've sharpened are ridiculously sharp and after I put them on the paper buffing wheel, it has a nice mirror finish BUT I can't seem to get that result on harder steels like -S30V, any ideas?

how much pressure are you using?
diamonds take a fairly light touch - especially when new, or they leave scratches.
once thoroughly broken in, mirror finish is pretty easy to get.

Are you saying S30V feels dull after the paper wheels after you have sharpened with the diamonds?

I am using a light touch. Knifeknut, no, it is sharp as hell the edge just doesn't look uniformly polished after EF.

I have a few diamond stones and they all seem to work better after sharpening a few inexpensive kitchen knives. I really love my diamond stones Im sure after they break-in youll be very happy with them. Ive never used the xtrafine or extraextra fine stones so i cant really say if youll be able to get a mirror finish with them, Ive found that the diamond stones really excel at quickly setting the angle.

Ordered F and XF from Woodcraft today and pleasantly surprised they are drop-shipped from DMT and FREE shipping today!!!

If what I've read before is correct, I would NOT do that. The diamonds will cut through the material of the softer stone, but since the softer stone doesn't have pieces of abrasive material sprinkled on top (like the diamonds), the material will be cut and be able to go between the diamonds, cut that metal, and take the diamonds out.

I hope that made sense. And I hope it's true because that's what I heard =S

THG, you explained that about as good as could be asked. The type of stone and grit of diamond plate will play large factors in lapping abilty.
