DMT Diamond & Ceramic Triangle sharpener

I have one of those, and I've almost never used it. Not quite as comfortable to use, as I would've liked. Never quite felt like it had enough length or surface area (diamond) to be as effective as I'd want. Might be very handy for someone who's accustomed to using a knife steel in the kitchen, though.

For someone with 'novice' skills, I think the Sharpmaker w/the diamond rods would give you the best results the earliest. It's pretty simple to learn, and very effective as a maintenance sharpening tool. It's not real aggressive, so don't let a knife get too dull before trying to touch it up. I think the quality of Spyderco's ceramic is better than what's found on your linked DMT rod. At least on mine, the DMT's ceramic was a bit rough & uneven. Didn't inspire much confidence in using it. I bought it a good many years ago, so I don't know if their ceramic has improved or not.

The DMT Dia-Sharp hones are excellent. If you want to dive straight into free-hand sharpening, that'll always be a good tool for you. Could also be used with a clamped guide too (DMT's Aligner clamp). If you don't yet have the free-hand skills mastered, an Aligner clamp might be the way to go with the Dia-Sharp bench hones. DMT has made a video demonstrating how to use the Aligner clamp with bench hones:

thanks for that input! I was thinking of actually getting the diafolds with with the aligner. What are your thoughts on that? I'm just trying to be the most economical with this, although if it pays out in the long run I wouldn't mind getting one or two benchstones.

Dia-Folds with the Magna-Guide & clamp are very good. I have this setup, and use it pretty regularly (used it a couple days ago, in fact). I have the C/F (blue/red) and EF/EEF (green/tan) Dia-Folds, and they've done the job nicely. I haven't found a pressing need for the XC Dia-Fold, although I'm still thinking about getting that one, too. I think C/F would serve most basic needs, if you didn't want to buy 'em all right away. The EF/EEF really add a wickedly sharp finish. Not polished, but extremely sharp.
