I picked one of these up yesterday at Woodcraft. 8"x3" coarse/fine with a stand. Pricey but wow, it does work well on large blades.

I have been using stones freehand for sharpening for over 40 yrs and never saw the need for a 'diamond stone'. Now I'm thinking 'Why did I wait so long?' Really puts an edge on quick. I think my hard arkansas and washita stones will be taking a rest for a while :)

Welcome to the twentieth century. ;)

I changed over to diamond hones years ago. Congratulations on your new DMT.

I use DMT hones for 99% of my sharpening. I use a 14" black Arkansas stone for the final edge only on my high carbon blades, as it seems to impart a super-fine yet 'toothy' edge... (and for sentimentality, as I inherited it from a great-uncle).

Yest it works faster and without mess.
Check also DMT Extra Extra Coarse - steel eating beast! Almost like belt grinder.

Thanks, Vassili.

Hmmm... I always seem to inherit gouged out chisels, that might be just the trick to avoid ruining my elbow from hours of sharpening!

I switched to diamond hones about twenty years ago, back in the twentieth century :D

This is a basic question, but does the diamond stones need to be lubricated like other stones and what lubricant is suggested? I never understood what the netting over the stone was on the diamond stones.
I am a newbie when it comes to sharpening.

Not at all. Only clean it with water - it need to be done often, because they remove steel very quickly.

Thanks, Vassili.

Are the DMT stones you are talking about the duo-sharp or dia-sharp?

I bought the DuoSharp plus. I did see the Diasharps there too. I had not seen them before. I went with the DuoSharp because it was the one that I was familiar with.

Water is the recommended "lubricant".

There is no netting over the stone. I suspect you are referring to the dimpled surface of the DuoSharp stones pictured here. The diamond abrasive is embedded in the surface area between the dimples. One of DMT's sharpening videos is here which explains the dimpled surface.

I just recently bought a set of DMT's about 4 months ago, after having freehand sharpened for over 20 years. I absolutly love them. I do however always finish off with a med. and fine Spyderco alumina ceramic.

I agree. I almost always use the DMT's, but like that extra smoothness the Spyderco's give the edge.
