i have a set of dmt diamond stones, coarse, medium and fine (i have the red, blue snd green) i hsd then about 2 years and they dont seem to work as well as they used to
i use them quite alot.my question is do they wear out. if not is there any way to bring some life back to them. or if there worn arethere anythihg that last longer. at first they worked very well and for a long time. the only lubrtcant i use on them is water with a small amout of dish liquid they are 2" by 6" any insight you guys could give would be much appreciated......willy

First thought is don't use force on new stones , it's not needed and tends to tear out diamonds especially the coarser grades.
Yes they do wear out but they seem to just get finer. I have an old Eze-Lap sharpener which is now the equivalent to 1200 grit .Just right for touch-up on things like S30V or CPM154 !

Don't know for sure but they will tend to plug up over time. I have one that I use dish soap and a small scrub brush on from time to time to scrub cleans and then rinse well and air dry. It always seems like it cuts better after cleaning. I was ready to scrap it the first time and read some where to clean it, I tried it and I am still using it today. I don't use it all the time but like it for a quick edge. I just prefer to do my final edges with an oil stone! MY 02

The more the diamone stones are used, the finer they get and cleaning helps. As mete said, using force on them will tear the particles loose.

The diamonds are held in place with electroless nickel plating. When the diamonds fracture to the point they are smaller than the plating thickness, the plating starts to wear away-releasing the rest of the diamonds and exposing the base steel of the sharpener.

I have a DMT clamp-on style sharpener that is 40 years old, more or less. Dad got it about 1970, still does the job. Needs cleaning with soap and a fingernail brush more often now but still works well. LIGHT pressure is the way to go.

mine have lasted years... ! as others have said... very little pressure when using, and the stones aren't as coarse as they were 8 years ago.. it seems the things last forever...even my chicom diamond files that i use and abuse are still cuttin good... huh ? .... and i've got an 8000 grit to do my graver faces and that is still cuttin nice aswell, you'd think the narrow graver face woulda dug out all the stones but it hasn't even with very lite pressure

well i may have been ustng too much pressure.its hard to change after using oil stones for years. iclean them with dish soap and water after each use. i also use a small amount of soap with my lubricating water. i also have a few oil stones i was given but the pores are clogged with stone and metal shavings. ive tried rubbing them on concrete to flatten them and hopefully grind away the particles but no luck it stil has very little resistance....willy

ill try the dishwasher.they are difinately much finer i believe unknowingly i have used too much pressure. i have an oppurtunity to get a set of 3 2 by 12 butcher shop 3 way stone with changeable stones for pretty cheap. ive really been thinking about getting it the coarse to fine stones work quickly and i then took a blade from the finest stone to the green dmt fine stone and was pretty supprised at the end result. i do most of my hurried sharpening on my 2 by 72 nwsg with great results but i am uneasy using it on knives i dont want to grind off too much metal from repeated sharpenings.its jus led me to re-consider my techniques. maby ill replace my dmt stones and be verry careful with downward pressure. ive even been considering sand paper on glass or card board wheels i guess im pretty confused whitch way to go on stones of different types or mabey a jig of some sort withe them since they have all been freehand till now any thoughts?
