I wanted to get thoughts of anyone who has use DMT diamond stones, for the price, you can get all four for little over 100. I use Japanese waterstones for software steels, S35VN and softer. But, I'm still looking at the S20V and M390 steels, so that is where I'd like to add diamond stones to the mix. My knives are 3.5 and 3.0 inch blades. So I'm thinking the 6" should be fine. Any opinions on the 6" versus the 8"?

That kit looks like a very good buy. I used 6" DMT bench hones for a couple of decades, then bought the 8" double-sided (red/green) a couple of years ago. Gave the 6" to my BIL as I found the longer hone worked a little faster due to the extra length, and also better for longer blades (4" and up). For your 3.5/3.0 blades the 6" should work fine.

I did notice the 8" has a little more variety but the price jumps a bit. The kit tops at 1200 but the 8" range from 325 to 8000. A lot like water stones, probably rarely use 600 and under, you could easily work with an 8" 1200, 2200 and possibly the 8000.

6" hones will be fine for those blades, or anything up to at least 6" length, for that matter; even longer if you're already very comfortable with using bench stones. I have DMT's double-sided Dia-Sharp 6" hones in the same grit selection (XC/C, F/EF), and have enjoyed using them for knives in the same size ballpark, and a few up to kitchen knife-size (8" or so).

8" bench stones are certainly nice and a luxury to use, and I DO have a DMT Duo-Sharp C/F at that size. But I haven't felt a genuine necessity to use it due to blade length concerns alone. If you do consider a larger one at some point, I'd suggest biasing your choice toward the coarser end; a longer, wider hone in a coarse grit (or XC, XXC, etc) can be an advantage for heavy grinding jobs on very large or thick blades. But, at the refining end of things, not as much steel needs grinding off and smaller hones can still get that work done pretty easily.

I was thinking of the 6" double sided F/EF, just about 50 bucks and would be perfect for keeping a 20CV sharp and I have a strop already. I have a universal stone base, so I have everything I need.

You should be good to go with that setup. I've been really impressed with my Spyderco Mule in CPM 20CV; it takes an incredible edge on the DMT ultra fine.

I have the 6" DMT Dia-Sharp kit (2 double sided stones EC/C & EF/F) and added the DMT bench stone holder.

Since you already have a stone base + strop, I'd just buy a 6" stone like you mentioned. I might go C/F double sided + EF single sided. That would be (roughly) $55 + $33 and meet all your needs. If you really wanted to save $, I might just go with the double sided C/F stone.

If you have the funds go for the 8" I cheaped out and bought the 6" set and am now looking at the 8"x3"
They work great just need more surface area to really work for me anyways.

Did a lot of hemin and hawin, ended up going over board as usual. Since I have the base and strop, I went with the D8EF, D8ME, D8EE. I've only used my 400 water stone a couple times, so I didn't grab anything too course yet. For water I have, 400, 1200, 5000 and 8000. After reading DMT's website a little more, the D8ME is not 2200, it's 4000, which is perfect between the 1200 and 8000. If I totally convert to diamonds, I'll probably sell my water stones, great starter stones to learn techniques, slower cutting till you figure out what your doing. Now that I'm more comfortable, time for something more aggressive.

Are diamond stones over kill for S35VN?
