I have found a decent deal on some 6" double sided DMT stones. EC,C,EF,F two stones four grits, and a wooden box for $80.00. Is this a pretty good deal? Also I see alot of folks with single sided stones is there something that makes a single sided stone better than a double sided stone? Thanks.

I think the single sided stones are 8x3in instead of 6x2in but I don't see a problem with the double sided. I would greatly appreciate it if you could pm me where you have found them.
Thanks

I would PM you if I could, but when I try to PM anyone on here I get a message about being a paying member or something like that. If you can PM me your email or post it I will send the link to you, or if its not against the rules I will post the link on here for everyone to see.

A fairly good deal, save a few bucks over knifeworks two dual dia-sharp 6", sweeten with a wooden box for storage. I like single sided 6" with rubber feet for use on any surface and prevent sliding around.

If I understood what I was reading, the wooding box would doube as a holder while the stone is in use, the box also has rubber feet on it.

Oh OK, I was thinking a 6x2x0.25" dia-sharp continuous benchstone, where the box may get in the way when serves as a base.

I think I've found the same deal you're talking about at SharpeningSupplies.com . I'm pretty sure they are a BF vendor, and if not, a mod will edit my post. It's quite a deal if this is what you want.

To me 6" stones are just barely big enough to get by with. They absolutely work, I just like a bigger stone. The often repeated advice is two fold:

1. It's easiest to sharpen a knife on a stone of the same length. So an 8" blade on an 8" stone.
2. Buy the biggest stones you can afford.

I've got the 8" XXC DMT and it is a *beast*. For major reprofiling it's invaluable.

Brian.

Thats the place. Probably 95% of my sharpening will be pocket knives, with the other 5% being a couple of fixed blade hunting knives probably around 8" or so.

That's a good deal. Those stones (6") should handle anything you've mentioned and then some.

All it says is 6", I would think its 6x2 but it doesnt say how thick they are. From the pictures of the box it looks like the stone will sit up high enough to work with it, I hope so anyways.

If nothing else, put the lid on the box, the stone on top of the lid, and sharpen away. You'll be able to figure it out better (there are other ways) when you get the stones and box. FWIW, I went over to that site and checked it out. Looks good to me - great value.

Well they are ordered along with a spyderco ultra fine ceramic stone, and a 1micron Dia-Paste. Man that paste is expensive!

Yes, and no. A tiny bit of that stuff goes a very long way, and lasts a long time on the strop. Just a few (3 to 5) BB-sized drops on the leather will be very effective. Use a putty knife, plastic flexible ruler or something similar to help spread it evenly; that works a lot better than trying to spread it with a fingertip, and it'll maximize the area covered by those few drops. I've been using the 1 micron Dia-Paste for over a year (stropping a LOT of knives), and have made only two applications to my strop. I've barely made a dent in the syringe it came in. And even then, I ended up having some excess paste left over, after using the plastic ruler. Solution?: I made another strop for it. Don't waste any of this stuff. ;)

Thank you for your input on the paste. I havent read anything on it yet, but I was thinking it would take a lot just to get started. Since I only need 3-5 drops I can see where this stuff will last a long time no more knives than I sharpen. With that being said thats not a bad price. I have done a good bit of reading on here over the last couple of days, and have learned alot. There are some very knowledgable, and helpful folks on this site. I have quiet a few questions that I want to ask, but I do the search instead. I still havent found the answers to half the things Ive searched for, because I run across more info that catches my attention. Ive still got a few questions that I cant find the answers to by using the search function, but Ill keep looking to try to avoid repeated questions. Again thanks for the help and input.

Well I got the stones in Friday but just got a chance to mess with them last night. They are some real nice stones, and that spyderco ultra fine is nice also. I use to free hand till I got the paper wheels about a year ago. The way I use to do it is way differernt than what the videos are showing on you tube. I would alway go 1-3 pulls toward me, then 1-3 away from me. That worked out alright I guess. Then I went to watching the guys on You Tube with the DMT stones, those guys make it look real easy to not take the blade off the stone, except to check it or maybe knock the burr off. I tried that but it will take some getting use to. The first knife I tried it on I couldnt even get close to sharp, the second knife is trying to get there but it was bed time, so Ill mess with it some more this afternoon.
