I have a coarse extra coarse folding DMT. The extra coarse one seemed to wear out pretty quick while all the others just keep working great. Would to much pressure and not enough water cause this?

Using them dry is always how I've done it. Too much pressure is the problem, I damaged mine the same way.

The diamonds in the XC are bigger, obviously, so it's easier for them to tear off of the steel plate.

You may have something there. I have one worn-out coarse DMT hone (4") -- maybe I did abuse it by using too much pressure -- my extra-coarse is still working fine though, but I only picked it up a year ago and have used it maybe a dozen times to re-profile blades. On the other hand, I've used my regular and ultra-fine DMT hones for close on a decade with no discernible change. I use them dry, but wipe the scarf off every few strokes, and clean them periodically with BreakFree.

I will ave to try a new ext coarse and use more lube and less pressure this time.

I have the XXC, I use pressure at times and have not torn any diamonds out. Seems pretty strong to me. It's my finer grit DMT stones that seem to just wear and wear.

I have had the same experience with my DMt's so far. My XXfine stone seemed to wear out (get bald spots) pretty quick.

But I could see how too much pressure with the XXcourse could lead to problems too....

Too bad they're not cheaper to replace. :(

Wearing out or wearing in?

I find it harder to hurt the finer stones and really if you think about it the finer the stone gets the less you should worry about it. Smaller/more diamonds contacting the surface and spreading out the pressure taking the load off a single diamond means you would need to use increasing pressure with each finer stone to do the damage you would do to a coarser stone.

DMT stones in the fine class get very fine with break-in but do not loose their cutting effectiveness they just start producing much sharper edges.

I have the XXC stone as well, and I noticed something: the XXC diamonds seem to be "stuck" into the plate a lot stronger than XC. Maybe the diamonds are so big that they can get deep enough into the plate that they stay in pretty well?

I had pretty much the exact same experience as the OP.

The XC side of my XC/C duofold has worn smooth in places... It happened very quickly, to the point that I thought about returning it as a warranty issue. But, I never got around to it (now it is a year later).

Most of the surface is still usable, but there is a significant worn patch... so I can't be confident that I'm sharpening evenly/consistently. :( The coarse side (and my other DMT stones) have held up fine (after a year or two of light use).

the xxc dmt can get torn up with heavy use the xc is in the same boat.

its inevitable with heavy use
