Hey, this one is to the knife sharpening aficionados. Does the Dmt extra extra fine stone really put a NEAR mirror polish on a knife. There are no videos on it so I cannot tell and if i was going to put a mirror polish on knives with stones alone what should I follow it with, Shapton 12K ceramic stone? THANKS

Hi knifefreak

DMT says the EEF is 3 micron. I have it and would say that is probably ballpark. I don't use it unless the edge is already quite sharp like able to cleanly cut paper or shave your arm. I have not gotten a mirror from it but it is great after the 1200 DMT. Just remember to use super light pressure. Also since it is diamond the scratch pattern will not be as smooth as one left by a waterstone of similar microns. You get a hazy finish that is really very sharp. If you really wanted mirror, try stropping lightly with 1 micron then .5 micron diamond pastes or spray. I use 1u dmt paste and .5u diamond spray both on leather. Or do the 1u on balsa and the .5 on leather. You will have a mirror shine provided you stepped up the grit ladder properly before you got to the EEF and the stropping stage.

In answer to your other question you could follow with a 12k shapton ceramic which would probably be around 1 micron (that's an educated guess) but I don't know if it would polish out the EEF's scratch pattern efficiently. YMMV

Mine is an older one. I believe it was before they started breaking them in at the factory or whatever they do now. Mine gives a great edge but it doesn't polish all that well.

Strange because others that have them swear by them

It will polish steels with high levels of Vanadium but it's only about equal to a 3k-4k waterstone at best. The edge sharpness however will be fairly high. In cases where the wear resistance is not an issue waterstones will produce a much better polish.

When polishing high wear resistance steels with DMT diamond plates it's always best to follow the EEF with the DMT 3 and 1 micron polishing pastes if going for a mirror edge.

My EEF DMT DiaFold gets pretty close to a mirror (following the Fine & EF DMT), if perhaps a bit hazy. In sharpening, it feels almost glassy-smooth, in spite of it generating a lot of extremely fine swarf on the hone, very quickly. I recently used my DMT Fine, EF & EEF to put a mirror on the bevels of an S90V Spyderco (Manix2), following with DMT's 1µ DiaPaste on basswood.

The more worn-in it is, the better it will polish. When mine was new it left pretty visible scratch marks, after wearing in for years it polishes to a pretty good shine now. The edges aren't as worn-in as the center still - though I try to do extra work on the sides and ends of the plate.

If using high RC, high Vanadium steel, it will make a nice bright finish. On carbon steel and low carbide stainless it will make a hazy finish but still bright. Per Jason, approx 4k JWS, maybe a bit finer. A sheet of 3 micron 3M diamond lapping film will produce a much brighter finish coming off the EEF, and a 1 micron film will approach a mirror finish. Some sort of additional work will be needed to make a mirror finish on any steel.

In my limited experience, the EF and EEF DMT stones change significantly the more they break in. The more the get used, the more polished the edge they produce.

When finished with the eef,I stick 3000/6000 grit tape to the stone for a final polish.

I've had pretty decent results going straight from the DMT EF to the Spyderco UF. The resulting finish is *definitely* mirror polished, but has some scratches in it too. If you want it perfect, you need small steps in between grits. For me, this is a fun finish to put on a blade every now and then.

this edge is bling bling sharp but still has a bit of tooth it is good for s30v imo last a long time.
