DMT Extra Fine - how fine?

How does the DMT extra fine compare to a black surgical arkansas stone? I want to get a duo-sharp but I plan to finish on the black stone and I don't know if it will be worth it to get fine / extra fine in that case. Would I be better off going with coarse / fine and then finish on the stone? I already know I won't be needing the coarse side very often.

I guess it's my own fault for posting this at the start of a weekend, or maybe I should have used a subject line like "Stranglers in Nude Woman Horror Shock"

but I could really use an answer if anybody can help. Thanks!

DMT EF is 1200 grit. Arkansas stones' grit cannot be determined by color as they are not consistent. It could be 800 or less, or 2000 or more. Even price is not an indicator. My GUESS is DMT C/F would set you up for your black stone. Sorry, but that's the best I can do.

Thanks for the input, Stich. I was leaning towards C / F already but I thought if extra fine was somewhere below black arkansas I could still use it.

Tell me, was it the "Stranglers in Nude Woman Horror Shock" that caught your eye? I knew I should have used that first.;)

Torz-
I agree on getting the coarse/fine combo. I have the x-tra fine in Eze-Lap, and DMT, and very seldom use them. Instead I use like a Spyderco white fine ceramic, and then strop to get the final smooth finish. That way if you have the diamond coarse you have a way to re-profile if you need.
This setup works for about anything I need to do, and believe me I am a sharpening freak, and have all the toys for sharpening, and what I post above works the best.
Hope this helps.

Larry
