DMT for 4" & Under Folders

Most of my knives are fixed blades, 1095, and I have a couple Norton India combos for them. I have those knives covered.

I now have a couple folders that have the S30V and maybe in the future a couple more with some high tech steel.

I am looking at a 8" DMT Duosharp blue/red coarse/fine 325/600 mesh 45/25 micron bench stone, or 2 of the individual diamond whetstones in the same grit.

I will probably get the base also, not too expensive.

Could I get by with the 6" models or just go ahead and get the 8" and be done with it?

Any thoughts on this are welcome, including grit choice.

Thanks,

Jon

If you're already considering the 8" C/F Duo-Sharp, I'd say go for it. I have one, and actually didn't use it for quite some time after I'd bought it (I'd built most of my sharpening habits around much smaller hones). When I finally did use it, I wondered why I hadn't taken advantage of it a long time ago. It's a great tool; between the C & F grits, an awful lot can be done with it; I believe C/F is the most versatile combination. The extra surface area means it'll work that much faster, and on bigger blades. The base for it is worth it as well (I have that, too).

I share David's impression. For a blade up to 4 inches u can get by with a 6 inch stone, in fact u can use one of the DMT credit card sharpeners on those knives too, but I really do like the bigger 8 inch stones. My favourite combination is coarse + extra fine. IMO u don't need the fine in between. I favour the continues stones (Dia-sharp) but the beauty of the dotted stones (Duo-sharp) in 8 inch is that they come in a combination of Coarse-extra fine (for half the price)!

Thanks for the help, glad I'm on the right track. 8" stones will future proof me as little.

I still say that Vassili was right. He's a Russian that used to post here, but I think got banned? Either way, his idea is that you don't need all of the stones to get great edges because the diamonds cut so fast. He advocated the XXC, C, and EF only. That combination has worked very well for me; I don't see any down sides to it.

One of the big up sides is the XXC stone/plate. For reprofiling, it's hard to beat that stone. It cuts like a demon.

Get the 8" stones. I use the continuous DiaSharp. I felt there was too much "noise" coming off the DuoSharp stones. Coarse - XFine - Ultrafine Spyderco ceramic. You can pick up an adjustable base if you like.
With aggressive diamonds, you can skip Fine and move directly to XFine.

Everyone has a different way of sharpening. Thanks for all the different input. I went ahead and ordered the 8" DiaSharp coarse and fine. If later I need the xfine, I'll get it.

I'll probably wind up with a 8" duosharp also just to see what the hubbub is about the continuous vs interrupted stones.

Thanks!

Where did you get the mounting base?
