Maybe someone has posted this before but I haven't seen it so here goes:

Instead of putting the money out for a DMT Magna-Guide or DMT Aligner System try this:

Get ahold of a DMT Aligner Guide like this for around 10-bucks from any of a number of sources.

Not my picture.

Drill a 3/32" pilot hole in the face of a double DMT Dia-Fold about an 1½" deep and then re-drill it with a 7/64" drill bit.

Cut a piece of wire, coat hanger about 5½" to 6½" long.

Insert the piece of coat hanger into the Diafold.

The "L" in the end of the rod is optional but can prevent the aligner from being pushed off the rod. The rod can be bent in different ways to adjust the plane in relationship to the sharpener surface.

Anyway, this works just as well as my Magna-Guide and might save some of you guys some money.

Why would anyone ever do this? KnifeCenter.com sells the magna guide for about $15

Why even bother with the guides? Run the guide holder along side a bench stone or sandpaper. That's what I do for a backpacking sharpener. Lay a piece of sandpaper down on a flat rock, pull the guide holders out to where I want them, clamp in a knife, and let the holders run along side of the sandpaper with the blade getting what it needs. Want a steeper angle? Find a second flat rock and put it beside the sandpaper so the holder is raised up a bit. Shale makes for the best bases.
