DMT MagnaGuide and EdgePro polishing tapes. A match made in heaven. Maybe

I toyed with the idea of getting a EdgePro a while ago after seeing all those awesome mirror edges that guys were getting with it. I'm a pretty cheap guy and it would cut into my knife and flashlight money so I just couldn't bring myself to spend the dough to get one. I went the DMT continuous stone/paste route instead and got really good results with them. But I still wanted to try a clamping based system because I was having trouble hitting the edges at the base of some of my Spyderco knives. I liked my DMT stones so much that I decided to give the MangaGuide a try. I got the C through EEF diafolds with the system and had a go with it. I got good results with it. I was able to get hair splitting edges with it and was able to reprofile some knifes. But my mind kept wandering to those EdgePro mirror edges while I was using it. Then one day I was watching a Youtube video on the EdgePro polishing tapes and something occurred to me. Could I just use the tapes with my MagnaGuide. I ordered the 2000, 3000, and 6000 tapes and decided to give them a try. What could be the harm in trying right. While they came today and I practiced on my new Cara Cara 2, a good cheap knife with an easy steel to give them a try. I was able to reprofile the factory belt sander marks away with the coarse diafold then I worked my way through to the EEF. Then gave the EP tapes a try. I just peeled them off and stuck them right to the Diafold and work my way through the three. Here is my results.

Good idea but you know you can use the clamp with the bench stones right ? ;)

Was 2k effective at removing the EEF scratches? or would a coarser tape be better?

I tried the clamp with the bench stones and I just couldn't get the the hang of it. It felt just odd to me.

The 2k tape worked to take the EEF scratches away but it took some time.

No reason to stop with 6,000 grit either....
You can get polishing films in 8,000/10,000/ and 15,000 in sheets about 10"x10" for just a couple of bucks each. If you like the edge with a 6,000 tape, imagine how you'd feel seeing an edge done to 15,000.

I cut them to size and stick them onto stones or blanks using ordinary white paper glue sticks. The tapes peel right off the stones when you're done and everything cleans up easily with plain water. You don't even need any soap!

Any place online to get these sheets?

Do they make diamond film?

I took a look on line and found diamond sheets, but only down to .5 microns.

The stuff I buy, I get in my local Home Centers and goes down to 10,000 grit. For the 15,000 grit I have to travel into downtown Osaka to a larger DIY shop. The packaging for the 10,000 is all in Japanese, but their web site is http://www.sankyorikagaku.co.jp/ and they sell 20,000 grit as well although my local stores don't carry that. The package that I have of the 15,000 grit doesn't have a URL on it and is from another company.

Here is a scan of a package of the 10,000 grit, which they are saying is .5 micron. This is the small size, about 5"x6", four sheets to a package, about $3 USD.

That's fine enough for me, where did you find the diamond sheets?

Great ideas! I imagine if you could mount the tapes to something smoother than the diafold stones it would increase effectiveness. How hard would it be to have a piece of glass cut to the same dimensions as the DMT Aligner Stone Holder? Then you could mount the tape to the glass for some real mirrored edges!

Several different sites...
I used 'polishing film' as a search string in Google and found some, then I used 'lapping film' as a search string and found some more.

THAT is the real secrete to most things... "I imagine." Then all one has to do is make it so in the real world! Imagination combined with experimentation! :)
The key is not to be locked into rigid thinking. Feel free to experiment .

Just a wee bit harder than ordering a pizza... Certainly no more than that. Just use tempered glass for safety. I glue the film right onto extra fine stones. They feel like glass anyway. I also glue them onto aluminum tape blanks for my EdgePro. Frankly, I don't think using glass will give me any real increase in edge polishing. I get that from a horsehide strop.
