I was in WoodCrafters the other day and came across a set of 4 DMT 2 sided folding diamond sharpners with the holes in the surface. I realize the holes in the surface material is so that one can use water with them, correct? I'm wondering if they are a good deal at $38 out the door?

Also, I noticed they have 'sharpening sandpaper' there also; as well as some flat, credit card sized, one sided diamond (DMT?) sharpeners that are gray with no surface holes, just flat. Would these be a better choice to carry afield for keeping the edge on my sharp tools? If so, which grade to get, fine, medium, etc? I think they run $14 smollens each.

I plan on purchasing some INFI blades down the road, will the above choices be useful with Swamp Rats and Busses?

Oh, and I'm in Tuscon AZ for a month if any knife nuts want to get together:D

I do not like those holes, I think it may work for chisels or flat edges, but not for curved edges with belly. I have no my own experience with this because always choose solid surfaced diamond benchstones from EzeLap Diamond Products.

Based on my experience I may say that for sharpening knives you need only extra coarse and extra fine diamond bench stones and skip everything between. For making new edge you need as coarse as possible and for following sharpening extra fine works just fine. Then you may continue with powder on MDF if you want extreme sharpness.

Thanks, Vassili.

I believe the holes are there so that you DONT have to use water. Steel particles will just fall into those holes instead of clogging up sharpener.

They work fine for all blades in my limited experiance.

Meanwhile, I just use the 600grit red DMT that my friend gave me. Its enough to sharpen knives but is a pain to reprofile. I'll use a cheap whetstone for that. I want to get a coarse or x-coarse DMT myself. Normally I just use the 600 grit until I can shave hair and then just go at it with my sharpmaker to polish up the edge more and remove burrs.

ziptrick has it right. The holes give a place for the shavings to go, at least that is the idea. Never been a huge fan of the stones with the holes.

They will work fine for a knife with a belly but not on a blade with a recurve. For recurves, try crock sticks.

I carry two DMT Duofolds all the time - X-coarse/Coarse and Fine/X-fine. The only problem I ever have with them is on very fine points. Sometimes the point drops into a hole and snags. If you are careful, it isn't a major problem. Can't say how they work on recurves, as I can't stand them, so mine never get dull (or used).

The instructions say to use water, and ONLY water, for lubrication in use. The holes are places for the fines to wash into instead of clogging the stone.

$38 seems a bit high, I just picked up a new F/XF at a local farm and ranch store for $33.99 plus tax, and a XC/C on eBay for $30.49 shipped.

Seems I'm a bit confused here guys:confused: When I asked about the DMT folders with the holes in the Woodcraft store the store guy said the DMT with holes was to be used with water for sharpening. I would think that sounds right as the water would help move the particles into the holes to allow continued sharpening to proceed, after which you'd just rinse off the stone.

The price is for 4 separate folders in the same package:eek: ceramic/xtra fine, fine/medium, coarse/xtra coarse...and I can't recall the other 2 sided combo. But they were in a long bag extended from the folding handles.

The other, 'credit card' sized flat gray DMT's looked to be what I want, but alas, they are one-sided. Anyone know of a 2 sided caredit card stone with extra coarse on one side and extra fine on the other?

Woodcrafters is a neat shop to persue for those who've never been....it'll give you the 'woodbug' real quick:cool:

I have a DMT credit card sharpener in my PSK...I wish they had abrasives on both sides, too. I thought putting on a working edge and maintaining it would be my main concern, so I opted for the medium. I can always strop with my belt.
I use a DMT with the holes, and some blades with really fine tips can hang up in the spacers.
If you find a two sided credit card sharpener, let us know!

Roger That! I'm forever persuing the wares in all kind of stores seeking the 'missing link' of sharpeners:cool:

I may get the medium flat card you have from DMT as it's what I intend it for also. I wondered if super gluing two different ones back to back would be the ticket:confused:

Dis' knife stuff is like kettle corn...I can't stop wanting more knowledge about all things knives:eek: At least I'm among similiar sickos here:rolleyes: ..."Honey, sell the washer AND dryer, I 'need' another blade:D .."But how will we do the clothes?" she asks...."I'll wash 'em in the tub and use the new blade to cut some clothesline to dry 'em";) "What about your other blades, can't you use one of them? "..."Uh, no, I already cut once with each of them already":D

How funny:D My dryer took a dump last night right after telling the my wife I was ordering a new Busse today! I get to spend the day opening it up and playing with the ohm meter to see what's wrong. I'm still gonna order that knife:eek:  while wet clothes hang all over the house.
I think the DMT cards are thin enough to stick together, but what glue to use...JB weld? Liquid nails? Gorilla glue? Goop?

Yeah, go figure huh:confused: Just when that knife was almost in yer hand:grumpy: I have some most excellent:thumbup: superglue in my fridge that I bought that really sticks and holds that I'll try on 2. When I get home I'll let you know what it is:cool: Right now I'm in Tucson AZ looking for a decent knife shop to handle some blades before buying........just seems there are'nt any decent shops left in the Wild West:eek:
