One of my DMT stones has a bit of rust, which at this point is purely cosmetic, but rust breeds rust and I don't want it spreading. So this is a Duo Sharp, CLR is safe on it right? I'm thinking about mineral oil for lubrication in the future as well.

I have had the same problem but discovered it was the metal dust left behind from the last sharpening. Try some dish soap and a nylon brush for cleaning, DMT also recomends that you use only water for lubrication.

If CLR doesn't remove the rust try barkeepers friend

only thing you need is a bit of powerdered bleach or Cleanser make a 1/2 1/2 mixx of cleanser and water and an old tooth brush and scrub away ull get then stones brand new in no time.

I use BreakFree to clean my DMT hones -- it lifts out embedded metal particles and protects from rust (I hone dry so don't use water on my DMTs any more, but never noticed any problems when I did).

I used water when I first got them and ended up ruining alot of blades for some resson now I use them dry and I couldnt be happier.

Barkeepers Friend is a product recommended for cleaning ceramics and I have used it on both natural and man made stones with success but I don't know about the DMT products. I have several but I just slap them on my thigh afterward to clean them off. Find Barkeepers Friend near the Comet and Ajax at the market.

(Not SPAM just an observation.)

Oil works excellent for cleaning dmt's. Just oil, wipe the surface and you're good to go. You don't need to keep it saturated with oil, just a light film to prevent rust is fine.
