DMT Sharpeners?

Do any of you have one of these systems? I have a lansky setup and it works good for $23. I'm saving for the edge pro but I ran across the DMT's and was wondering.

I keep one of their folding sharpeners in my pack for touchups when I'm away from home. I really haven't tried many other comparable sharpeners, but I'm happy with its performance

I use the DMT Diafold Magna Guide system, and it works very, very well. Gets an edge super sharp, then a quick lick with a strop and it's scary sharp. Small investment, outstanding performance.

I use the DMT folder as well (without a guide), which I like to use for hand sharpening. I need to learn how to strop (and buy a strop) to put that finishing touch though...

If you can hand sharpen then stropping is kindergarden stuff. Just watc some of the great stropping videos on YouTube.

I have both the DMT and the Lansky diamond systems. For me the Lansky is a better set up, I'm able to get my knives scary sharp using it along with a strop. The DMT system works but I think it's kinda flimsy and has a tough time handling thick and long blades. For thicker knives you need to buy a seperate clamp for it to fit. I bought the DMT first and after not being really pleased with it I went ahead and bought the Lansky.

Perhaps you didn't read far enough into the instructions. I commonly sharpen a Becker BK-2 — which is very much like the RC-5 — without any problem whatsoever using a DMT Magna Guide. Both knives are .25 of an inch thick, which is about as thick as any knife around. Simply loosen the brass screw in the front near the jaws until your knife fits in: piece of cake.

I have a DMT aligner - I paid $46 with 4 diamond hones & a serration sharpener (diamond rod). I have ordered the other 2 (X course & XX course) diamond hones and the curved hone for sharpening blades with a recurve. I have no problems getting knives sharp and once my 2 courser stones arrive then regrinding the edge will be even easier. My knives are all sharp enough to shave with and the system is pretty easy to work with. I have no problems sharpening my thicker blades either.

I love the cutting ability of the diamonds.

I have a Sharpmaker with diamond rods - I love it but I may buy the DMT aligner full kit and try it out too.

I own the Lansky; I've got a DMT on order. I do lots of reprofiling and the faster cutting diamonds would help. Also, the DMT solves several problems with the Lansky, namely you don't have to screw in the stones in exactly the same place.

I'm sure you'll get lots more responses over in the Maintenance subforum.

The screw that's in mine isn't long enough to allow anything over 3/16", I've tried many times. The instruction book even says that it won't fit thicker knives and you need to purchase a different clamp in order to fit them.

I've never heard of that, 333rm, and I've been using the DMT's for quite awhile. Things could have changed, I suppose, but last time I was on their site they mentioned blades up to 3/8". Have you tried loosening the big screw in back as far as it will go, then back the brass screw in front way, way, out? It works just fine for me. 3/16" just doesn't sound like very much.

Have a Magna Guide and Coarse -> XXF set, works very well for me. I was very new to sharpening when I picked up the set but I am getting decent at it now. I primarily picked the Magna Guide over other sharpening systems because it seemed to be more hands on than the others and you the hones can be used for free hand sharpening when you wanna do that.

I have the red folding DMT sharpeners that I use in the field for touch ups. It is real handy for multiple touch ups when cleaning hogs, my D2 knives and most of my others can get through a deer without touch ups. We wash hogs off with a garden hose but they still have enough grit on them to dull knives until you get the skin off. When I butcher game I want something simple to pull out of a pocket and use without assembly or use of a bench.

I have the credit card sized diamond plates, in coarse, fine and extra fine. Great for hand-sharpening, but the blades will still need a tad more work with a strop or finer ceramic sharpeners to really get that hair-popping edge. Well worth it though.
