I want to purchase the DMT 8" benchstone. (two grit sides). My supplier has the 325 grit / 1200 grit , and the 600grit / 1200 grit only .

Does anyone own one of these (or both ) , and what would be your choice ?
I am thinking the 325 side would be too course , but not sure. They are expensive here ($100+) , so I want to make a good choice.

Thanks

For dull knives the coarse stone(325) works very fast. The 1200 is a very fine grit and only really works with already sharp knives. I would get the 600/1200 combination and just buy some coarser sandpaper should you need sharpen a very dull knife. Extra coarse 120 is also important. You have a nick/chip/roll your ruined without some very coarse tool.

Thanks tnt. I have a 1"by 30 " belt grinder for the nicks ( various belt grits ), so perhaps your rec of the 600/1200 is a good one. I have some hard knives , so a diamond stone is the way to go. I have the keychain 600 grit , and that seems to work OK , but just too small for bigger blades ( which I seem to like .)

I think you'll be happy with that choice. May your blades be sharp:thumbup:.

I'll go and get it , do some sharpening with it , and post how I like it later .

If you've got a sander for removing a lot of metal, I'd say either would do you fine. Personally, I would get the C + EF combo. EF removes scratches very quickly anyway.

Blue/ red

Well... they don't carry the blue/red , so I got the green and red. It does a great job on Aus-8 , VG-10 , and carbon steels ( 0-1 , 1095,etc)

Thanks for the input fellas. Small enough to pack for camp , too.
