Those of you who use DMT stones, what size stone do you use?

I'm looking at acquiring a 6" or 8" stone. Being of Scottish descent, I'm looking hard at saving $ by getting a smaller stone. I've used a 6" India/Crystallite stone for a number of years and have never felt like I didn't have enough stone. At this point I'm looking to sharpen a ~3 1/2" D2 blade.

Is there a reason I would need more than a 6" stone for 3 1/2" blade?

Frank, I'm sure that you already know that the common advice is to buy the largest stone you can comfortably afford.

I have DMT's all the way from 10" down to credit card size. The 6"x2" should do you nicely as I often use another manufacturer's 5"x1" diamond hone to good effect on my D2 blades. (Such as Queen knives like your new Cattle King.)

Don't sweat it.

For a knife with a 3 1/2'' blade, a 6'' stone would be fine. Personally, I would buy the 8'' . In fact, I do have a set of 8'' DMT stones. The 8'' variety will give you more capacity, and you have already decided to spend the money for a good stone, so don't shortchange yourself here, just for the sake of a couple dollars.

I own the 5x1 inch stones three different grit ( and also being a scot) I find that most of my sporting knifes I have no problem keeping them so sharp most my freinds will not ask to borrow my knife.:)

I would say longer an thiner. Proably 15"x1" will be ideal for knives. But they only have 11.5" longest, so I use 11.5" even it is bit more expensive, however this is more long term spending so additional $30 does not matter and you really need two - Corse (may be ExtraCoarse) and Extra Fine.

Thanks, Vassili.

I use the 4" 'stones' in the DMT Aligner Jig, from X Course thru to X Fine
It works very well.
I use it to rebevel my Queen D2s when I get new ones

The kit comes with Course to X Fine and I purchased an X Course
So the jig and the extra stone comes to $50
