Recently got one of the keychain ones in Extra Fine. Now, I've used it a few times, and I noticed the front get darker, from shiny to grey-ish. I rinsed it off, no change. Even soap won't really get it out. It still cuts plenty well, but am I not removing the metal, or will it get a little darker like this after the first use?

It is loaded with metal, you need to scrub it off.

BreakFree works very well on DMT stones to lift out embedded metal.

Noticed the same thing using my DMT benchstone to flatten my Japanese waterstones. Don't know if it is a bad thing or normal either. But in my case it is definitely not loaded up with metal particles.

I use Dawn dish washing soap to clean mine. I pour some on and just rub it in good and rinse off. I've used them for years.
