I have D8E and D8EE for some time now and have some concern about their surface quality. It has spots all over it lik it was iten with small hammer or something.

Here the scans I made:

I never have mirror polish on my edge with D8EE which is 3 microns, while I have it after Spyderco Fine and after leather loaded with 6 micron diamond powder. I also notice that when I am sharpening - sounds like it scratch time to time or hit some micro bumps... I thought it may go away in time, but it does not.

So I am wondering if this surface are actually factory defect or something. Can somebody post scans of their D8EE surface?

I have EzeLap ExtraFine and their surface just perfect:

I am very happy with D8XX - it has no unevenness on the surface and eat steel as a crazy. As well as Coarse stone has also very good surface.

I already sent e-mail to DMT yestarday - for some reason they have address like exportcustomerservices @ dmtsharp.com - I hope it is right place to ask. Do not have answer yet.

Thanks, Vassili.

From the DMT web site::

DMT Customer Service at 800-666-4368, ext. 1. Our office is open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST.

I send them mail yesterday and have no replay yet. I am not sure that I be able to explain my concern without picture, so this is why I send mail with this scans attached. I'll call them if I have no replay...

Thanks, Vassili.

I just talk to them and they are shot down this week, so this is they did not answer yet, but Monday they will replay.

Thanks, Vassili.

Keep one thing in mind~ Diamond Stones don't have the polishing properties as do ceramic or Novaculite stones do. Now I have also heard that the Shapton waterstones tend to polish really well. I have yet to own one myself but they are on my list of things to get. But I have had some great polishing results with Spyderco's 302 fine and 302 Ultra-fine stones.

The biggest claim to fame with diamond stones is their fast and uniform ability to remove stock efficiently. The only thing I use diamond stones for is manual re-profiling when I am out in the field or away from home.

I do like the somewhat grabby edges that diamond stones can give you though. Good Luck

Same diamonds works fine when loaded in leather - polish is best I saw. I hope this is only matter of grit and surface quality not diamonds itself. And bench stones have hard surface so this is why I was so excited with this new 3 micron diamond stones. Before it was no technology which allows this grit and just recently they introduced it. We'll see I hope that it is something wrong with my D8EE and I will have some good one to have polished edge (as it was reported).

Thanks, Vassili.

I know this is a little late as you have already gotten to the point of calling DMT, but I just noticed something that may shed a little light on the surface scratches. I don't know if it is a defect or perhaps normal, but as I was sitting here with my d8xx in hand, I noticed the smooth bottom side of the steel plate has just about the same scratch and dent pattern that is on your other stones that you scanned above. It may be that all their steel surfaces are like that, or somewhere in their process someone or something is neglecting to choose the finished steel surface to layer the diamonds on.

Just a thought.

I'm supposed to be getting a couple of double grit diasharps this week if 888 gets them in from his supplier. If I get them, I'll post whether mine has the same scratch and dents.

So I got my Dia Sharp dual surface stones today, and I my ex fine/fine stone has the same small dents as your scan above. I can see just a few dents on my coarse surface. I do however have an issue with my ex fine/fine stone. It seems the fine surface is almost completely smooth. Some parts are as smooth as the steel it is painted on. I don't think it is stamped wrong as I can see the grit pattern easily, and I can barely make it out on the ex fine side. It looks more to just have a dull finish, but it is certainly much rougher than the fine surface.

The fine surface is also covered with lateral scratches similar to the scratches you have on you ee stone. I am wondering if your ee came with those long scratches, or did you put them there while using it? The scratches seem to be as long as knife strokes and I can only make them out on the fine side. I can't find any on the ex fine side. I was wondering if your fine surface came with the same scratches, and did your ex fine surface have a much duller look to it than your fine surface?

I talk to our local WoodCraft store holder yestarday and he sad they (ExtraFines) all are like this and I should not worry about this things. I came back and let it another try. Once I was not focused on the surface I notice that edges of the stone is reason for scratch sound when I sharpening blade. So I went to the grinder and slightly, with 330 grit hanging belt under 45 degree angle smoose the edge not hitting stone diamond surface of course.

I guess somehow during transportation or something this edges was hit and it make them bumpy (which is not the case on D8XX - it has round edges) and this does not affect chisel sharpening (most what it used for) but only seen on knives - knife's blade is longer and goes over stone width. So after I round that edges a bit I give it another try with RatManDu and it just different story now - it moves fine no scratching sounds same as on extra fine ceramic. It is not mirror polish but almost it I may say, and polishing on leather goes better. I will continue to experiment with D8EE, but I guess my initial concern goes away now.

I do have light scratches seems like from polishing, they are not really deep and does not affect sharpening I think.

Thanks, Vassili.
