Dmt vs. Atoma

Need a diamond plate that I will be using strictly for lapping waterstones. I'm looking at DMT D8xx and the atoma 140. Both are close on price and grit. I have no experience with either. Which do you all prefer?

The atoma works much faster, but a dmt 325 is very serviceable and is a lot cheaper option.

Try www.vidbrusok.ru

An 80ish grit diamond hone is about 15 bucks. I have them ranging from about 160 to 1200 grit and they're really damned good hones. As good as DMT and much cheaper. Never tried atoma so I can't comment.

How flat are they? They may be inexpensive but I would be hesitant to lap a pricy shapton with something that could mess it up.
That being said, I could see trying a couple of the for sharpening. Gotta get out my ruble calculator.

Slightly OT but I love sharpening with the atoma 1200. When you are right on the bevel the feedback is very satisfying. Did not love the DMT EF, kind of inconsistent scratch pattern, Jason said try the atoma, as usual he was right. This was 3 years ago, dmt may have improved that grit by now.

It'll be quite awhile until I can get home and take some more pictures but they're flat. Here's the only one I have that even kind of shows how flat they are. There's one bar in the guide arm and another on the table next to the congress stone. Each side of the stones have a different grit. They're listed in some European or Russian measurement but on the site there's a comparison chart on the top.

I hadn't really looked at the cktg plates. They are so cheap I just assumed they were junk. I'm not afraid of investing money in my sharpening gear either because I keep making the money back sharpening things up for people. Kinda turning into a good little part time business.
