DMT Whetstone + Sharpmaker w/Fallkniven???

I am a novice at sharpening and would appreciate help in choosing a DMT Whetstone. I would like to use it to reprofile edges on especially poorly sharpened knives before using my Sharpmaker to save time and effort. I have a similar concern as G Clark on the "Help me find a mate for my Sharpmaker" thread. From reading the responses extra coarse is the choice.

At the same time I have a Fallkniven F1, S1, & U2. Comments in the forum state that they are convex grinds and a Sharpmaker may not be the best way to sharpen them (I have an email in to Peter at Fallkniven asking about this). Fallkniven recommends the following with a flat fine or very fine diamond stone: "Try to cut a slice off the stone. Impossible of course, but you will make the right movement and will surely keep the correct angle! A circular movement along the edge will also bring a good edge. Finish with some light, polishing strokes."

One question is would a fine Whetstone be a good compromise and still be enough to really help with poorly sharpened knives before the Sharpmaker?
Another is will the Sharpmaker work OK with the Fallknivens?
Any other thoughts?

Thanks for the help.

I use a DMT DuoStone, it is coarse on one side and fine on the other.

I never use an extra coarse stone. If I need to remove tremendous amounts of metal I use a belt sander. Coarse and fine will get you back to rough cutting sharp then the Sharpmaker will slick up the edge.

If you want super sharp then use a strop charged with fine polishing compund or one or the commercial slurries.

Thanks furgalweaver. The DuoSharp sounds good but I am not interested in spending $100. The Whetstone is about $30 for a 6" stone in one grind. I could get the Duofold handheld for about $26 with coarse & fine but it is only 1" by 4" and handheld - how useful is this?

1x4 for $26.

That's exactly what I use. I have sharpened everything in the shop with it. All the way up to the Collins machete that I clear the woods with. I even sharpened a carbide saw blade with it. Just a little practice and you can do any knife or woodworking tool with that little Duo.

The Sharpmaker will work fine with the Fallkniven blades, I would pick up a large coarse/fine benchstone if you want/need to reshape the edge, or they get really dulled in extreme cutting or get damaged.
