DMT X-Coarse?---When will we see the Diamond Sharpmaker rods?

Hey Guys/Gals,
I'm looking to get a 6" DMT X-Coarse stone to lay upon my Sharpmaker. What is a good price to pay and where from? Any word on when the Sharpmaker diamond rods are due out? I'd rather get the right tool for the job. Will the Sharpmaker diamond rods be as coarse as the DMT X-Coarse?

Thanks in advance!!
Shane

I am also anxious to get my hands on a set of diamond sleeves for my Sharpmaker 204. Can anyone tell me when they are expected to become available?

Also, I gather that they used to be available... Would the old ones made for the 203 fit a 204? Does anyone know where the old versions might be found?

It is my understanding the older 203 ceramic triangle dimensions were different than the present 204 size. I will check my one set of diamond sleeves this evening on 204 vs. 203 and post results, also will check x-coarse DMT vs Spyde sleeves. The original diamond sleeves may be available used.

The suggestion of using DMT coarse/extra coarse 6" bench stones works very well. Check out FAQ Sharpening by Joe Talmadge on this site, excellent discussion.

FK

I use my diamond Speedsleeves on my 204 all the time. They fit fine. I made rubberbands out of bicycle innertubes to hold the sleeves on the outside of the case. FWIW you can still find the sleeves around. I got mine in a local store about a year ago. If you go to a store that carries Spyderco just ask them about the sleeves. The ones I got weren't on display and I think they had been floating around the stock room for a few years.

As far as the DMT extra coarse stones--I would personally opt for a medium or coarse diamond hone. I don't believe that the extra coarse really removes metal that much faster than a medium, but it certainly leaves a coarser edge. YMMV.

Does anyone have a set of the diamond sleeves they no longer need? I'd love to buy a set, but I haven't been able to find one anywhere locally or on the web.

It took me 4 or 5 years of looking to find some. I passed over them when they were still available readily, thinking I would pick them up later. Good lesson for me. If you really want something there may be no later.

The DMT X-Coarse is much coarser than the Spyderco diamond Sleeves. I agree with the Med or Coarse DMT being equivalent.

Hi Bad guy, FK, welcome to the Spyderco forum.

We finally have a source for the steel triangles to be coated (we're going with a steel triangle that is plated rather than a sleeve). This has been difficult.

We are still having trouble finding a diamond plater that can put diamonds on the steel that stay on the steel against our tough blade steels and the angle of the sharpmaker. I'm working on it steadily, honest (actually two of us are working on it).
