DMT XXC: reprofiling without electricity

So a couple of months with my DMT XXC and sharpening a couple of badly dulled kitchen knives from friends and family have given me a couple of opinions on the XXC. This thing rocks! Reprofiling by hand has never been easier and with a couple of strokes from any blade and you can even reach a hair shaving sharp edge with JUST the XXC. Even with regular bi-weekly maintenance of some knives that get dull really fast, the XXC can bring the two bevels of an edge together in no time, saving you a lot of time, So if you want to reprofile or shorten the time it takes for you to sharpen by hand dramatically I really recommend the XXC.

With a couple of caveats though. It does leave up a pretty scratched up surface on your bevel, it's kinda expected with a 120 grit surface, but it's not that hard to get rid of the scratches. Even with my 1000 grit Japanese water stone it cleans up the scratches really well and it doesn't take that much time.

The only thing I don't like about this stone is the rounded corners. You can't get to the ricasso on knives that have them.

Please, be careful - it is not only eat steel as grinder, it also pollute same way. I have plastic glass betweeb D8XX and my face to prevent respiratory problem.

Thanks, Vassili.

just curious have you tried a complete mirror polish after going straight from XXC to 1K ? in my experience if you don't spend quite a lot of time on the 1K you'll have residual scratches from the XXC in your mirror polish.

something else to have in mind is that with too much pressure on a 120 grit diamond stone can be pretty hard on a very thin and very hard edge. i've put a blue steel petty previously thinned down to paper thickness do weird things on the XXC (for repair as you may expect after excessive thinning).

Good to know, thanks

nozh2002, do you use your D8XX dry? I use water and a drop of two of dishwashing soap on all my DMTs and it seems to do a good job of keeping the bits of steel in suspension on the surface of the stone. I also flush the surface of the stone with fresh water whenever the buildup is significant.
Then again I don't use my D8XX very often or for long periods since I don't do a lot of extensive re-profiling.
