Ok yall, Im sorry if this has been asked several times already, but Im not to good with the search function. When I try to use the search function, if I was to type in sharpening with DMT, it will bring up any post that has DMT in it.

Sharpening with the DMT, or any stone I guess. When using the coarse stone do you sharpen till the knife is shaving sharp then work your way down in grits? Or do you just get a pretty good edge with the coarse, then work your way down to fine, extra fine, then ceramic, and so on?

I have tried to get a couple of knives shaving sharp with the coarse stone but I cant, I will get a pretty good edge, but thats it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont think you will get a shaving edge with the coarse. Have a look at jdavis882 and solosknife review on youtube. Both have very good videos about sharpening.
I tend to work up a burr on one side, the switch to the other side and get a burr again. After this I change the stone to a finer grit and repeat until I have worked up through all the grits. Then I remove the burr completely and strop.

I'm sure some are able to at least 'pop some hairs' from the coarse DMT, but I wouldn't want to try that edge for actual shaving. ;)

At any rate, just make sure to work for the burr on the coarse. That's the cue that your edge is fully apexed. Once the burr's been verified, some lighter passes on the same hone can start to reduce it. Then, continue the refinement of the edge (further reducing the burr, and refining the scratch pattern) with the subsequent hones. Some like to remove and then re-create a burr on each grit step. That's not necessary, but it can be helpful in ensuring you've reached the apex with each hone. Obviously, at the last hone, you'd want take everything very gentle & light to clean up as much of the burr as possible, before stropping, which should take care of the rest.

Thanks guys. I guess I have wore more off the stones than I needed to, because I was trying to get it to shave the hair on my arm with the coarse stone, before moving on to the next stone. Mr.David I can see where taking the burr down, then reworking it back up with each grit would help someone new. But it does seem like you are making more passes, therefor you are taking the chance of making a miss lick. Again thanks guys for your help. I've watched several you tube videos, and they have showed me some things I didnt know.

With the Coarse 320 mesh hone you should be able to get a edge that effortlessly removes arm hair. Might want to lower the angle some and use lighter pressure. Soapy water will help keep burr formation smaller too.

I'm really not that good, but I've learned a lot in the last year or so.

With my XXC DMT, I can barely scrape off a hair or two after trying to remove the burr with the same stone. Taking it directly to a strop, I end up with an edge that definitely shaves, though not very cleanly.

The C DMT produces a sort of shaving edge, a bit better than the last step off of the strop. Stropping this Coarse edge yields a quite shaving sharp edge. It's not like a straight razor, but definitely removes hair, popping it off.

Fully apexing the edge is the key. I can't fully apex without raising a large burr, but I've gotten good at removing the burr so it's not a problem. Fully apexed and then stropped, for me, makes a REALLY sharp edge.

Brian.

You're trying to shave wrong. You need to keep the blade at a 90 degree angle to your arm and yank it down and away really hard.

but in seriousness, you're probably removing a lot of steel with your coarse stone. I'd try getting a finer one.
