Hi all!

Is there a do-all knife sharpening system that I can run my knife through a few times and have it come out decently sharp?

any suggestions?

Thanks!

If your knife has a convex or Scandinavian grind edge you may have to just sharpen it freehand.

Step 1: Get a Rock. It should be vaguely flat sandstone.
Step 2: If the rock isn't extremely flat, find another rock and rub the two together until you have a flat surface.
Step 3: Rub your knife's edge against the flat part of your rock.
Step 4: Repeat as necessary.

This will get your knife 'decently sharp', generally speaking. I'd say this system will give you the best sharpness-to-cost ratio out there. Cost: none, Sharpness: Decent.

Recurves will be a problem, though. For that, you'll want to look for a rock with a curved edge... ;)

In all seriousness, though, sharpening free-hand is a pretty inexpensive, simple way to sharpen most knives, and stones come as fine as you like.

I've been using a spyderco tri-angle sharpener for about 10 years, works pretty well on about 30 benchmades I've had, including the difficult to work with M2 tool steel.

There is NO do-it all sharpener but there is many tools that make it all possible. Sandpaper is a good place to start as you can get it for cheap and in a wide range of grits, you can also form it for different blade shapes and grind styles. Once you figure out what you really need for sharpening you can buy stones or jigs or systems to suite your needs best but until then I would suggest sandpaper so you don't end up getting something that only works for part of your needs.
