and travel?

It is a little portable thing that can sit in your home, vehicle or in other places when you travel?

I can't think of the proper word for it now.

Do you like ATT's set up for this or do you have Verizon or some other company in the western states?

I loathe CHARTER and my Charter email is down again.

I am waiting on some real estate information, I am not an agent, but a potential buyer and every single time that I am expecting something important or if I have an ad up... the dang CHARTER company goes down with their email.

I am beginning to think that I need one of those FREE emails that I used to have with my former ISP email too!

My husband will not be a happy camper if this is not fixed and we are waiting for some more information on some property!

Thanks for any or all information.

We don't have AT&T, but use Verizon's wireless broadband (4G service) here at home. We're out in the boonies, have no cable or DSL run down our road. Our only other option would be satellite internet access, but that would require me to chop down a bunch of trees to the southwest beyond our property lines.

So, instead we use Verizon. About $80 for 10 gigs of data, which we ALWAYS exceed ($$$). Oh well, such is life! Verizon's service is reliable in our area.

I believe you are referring to a "hotspot" device which is essentially a phone for internet access. As long as you have cell coverage, you can use it. I had one for years justified by business needs when I traveled. My last one was out of contract for a year or so and I turned it off temporarily to see if I missed the convenience and how often it was really needed. For me, it wasn't worth the extra money, so I killed it. I use Verizon and have since the mid-1990's.

You can also use a smart phone to generate wifi and connect to that. I think that's sort of a temporary kind of approach, but I use it from time to time. If I needed such on a regular basis, I would own the dedicated hotspot device mentioned previously.

My home internet is provided by the local utility company via fiber optic cable and is supposed to be one of the fastest available. I like it a lot. The provider is very dependable. I also pay for a business phone and fax line from them.

I am deeply hesitant to use AT&T for anything at this point. I started my business using them as my internet and phone provider because I was dissatisfied with the service I was getting from Time Warner. That was quite literally the worst mistake I have made in my short time as a business owner. Service was intermittent even with a hard connection, phone lines would go down for days at a time and we could only tell if we tried to call the business. Multiple service calls to fix simple problems. I'm quite convinced that, had we stayed with them, we would be out of business as we could not communicate with clients in a timely manner.

My own, tinfoil hat, conspiracy theory is that AT&T has become a puppet front to make Time Warner look good.

To be totally clear, my experience was really awful, but I also don't think it's the norm. I just can't, in good conscience, let a thread like this pass without chiming in. ;)

Why don't you sign up for gmail? Even if you switch providers, your gmail keeps on working.

AT&T promised us we could get u verse and shipped us a modem, it wouldn't work we are way too far away from the "office". Then they refused to give us DSL back! Had to go with Dish internet, which is way faster than AT&T's DSL ever was. After spending hours on the phone last week, trying to get AT&T to help me, I'd never use them again.

I don't care much for AT&T. Had a telephone marketer identify themselves as being with AT&T. Renew your phone and service and I can give you a better deal. I'll even include a cell phone and the total will not cost you anything more. I didn't need the phone or particularly want it. Well, guess what? I got a separate bill for about $75 for the new phone that I only used once to check that it worked. I called and they said you signed a contract.... sorry. Well, the verbal discussions said nothing paying extra for the phone. It went about 3 months getting bills monthly. I finally talked to someone there who told me that the telemarketer was not with AT&T. They canceled my contract and credited me for all the previous billing. The phone service ended at that point. But, the problem with AT&T is that they are generally pretty insensitive to reasons and only want your money. They don't give a crap.

My business phone/fax lines and dsl internet was through AT&T also at the beginning. I will say it worked most of the time unlike some here have said. They also were fairly responsive if there was a problem. But, I switched phone and dsl to another provider after a couple years at a lower price point. Good to check your "contract" period if one exists by the way. The new provider said switching would cost me nothing. I had no idea about the contract, but I accepted what they said at face value. Well, AT&T charged me $1000 for the broken contract and we fought for a year off and on via telephone. Finally, I paid them $500. The other company said.... contract, that's your problem. How would we know?

Went a couple years with them and noticed the cable based faster internet was costing just about as much or less than I was paying for dsl. After the contract expired, I notified them that I was switching providers. This contract automatically renewed for 12 months if you didn't tell them anything IN WRITING. Switched to a local company and I'm saving about $150/mo with better service.

I'll never go back to AT&T if I have any other practical choices/options.

Been very pleased with Verizon wireless service. Have been a customer for 20 years continuously.

Folks,

Thank you for your information and replies.

I do want to dump Charter for my ISP provider.

I may get a free email as I mentioned in my post above like I USED TO HAVE even though I had email through my ISP for years back in my former state, up in the Sapphire Mountains here in Montana and in this town too.
