do any of you use a knife roll/storage case?

all of my knives are either in their factory boxes, or loose, laying flat in the top drawer of my nightstand. this is no good. i'm constantly having to shuffle everything around to find a particular knife, and i can't stand opening and closing the factory boxes again and again.

i already considered building a little custom box/tray that would sit in the drawer with a separate compartment for each knife, but that's cloud talk -- i don't know if i'll ever actually sit down long enough to build it. i also gave up on storing each in its own soft bag of some sort -- takes too long to find the one i want, and seems a slow way to access each knife once i do.

i've been eyeing some knife rolls and cases for a while, and i more or less like what i see. i find that most solutions store anywhere from 2 to 48 knives, and that seems great. i'd like to be able to store the 25+ folders i have, and have some room for the next 15 or so.

i see this on eknifeworks. i know! United Cutlery! yuck! ... and yet? maybe a storage case is something even UC can't screw up (though i'm not holding my breath). i also see Spyderco sells a couple, but the prices are a fair amount higher than their competition (at least, on the official website).

so.... what do you recommend? what are you all using to store your knives, while keeping them accessible? i'm looking to store each knife indivicually, in it's own space of some sort (be it in a soft-walled space, or a padded holder, etc.).

thanks!

I prefer to keep my knives in the factory boxes, but I had several knives that didn't have boxes or cases. So bought a knife roll from SMKW. It's good for small folders; large folders or straight knives won't fit. I also have a large straight knife that came without any packaging - a vinyl zipper case from SMKW was perfect for it.

I'd love to have a full-size glass display case, but floorspace is a premium. I've also thought of using an old Timex watch retail display case (they rotate and have lights) but all of them I've seen are low-class plastic. A glass-top coffee table would be a cool way to display a selection of my knives.

In my mind I have preliminary plans for a full-height locking display case. The top would swing open, and knives would be displayed in the large area plus on the inside of the doors. Mid-height of the cabinet would be drawers where knives could lay flat. The bottom of the cabinet would be storage for all of the sheaths, boxes, etc. I think it's a good plan, but unfortunately I'm no carpenter.

So for now I have a steamer trunk. It's sub-divided with cardboard boxes, which are filled with the factory boxes.

You could always send your extra knives to me, and I'll take care of storing them. :)

I was going to get a small cabinet just for my knives, lights, ect. Or maybe a 4 pistol case?

Still looking for a place to get the black foam though.

i should be getting one of those UC knife rolls soon.
i too have that drawer/factory box fumble problem,
which this roll should solve.
i've got like 8 good knives that need a good home,
so i bought the 16 knife roll.
i'll post up after i get it and use it for a bit.

Ever gone to a Tap's Plastic nearby and checking out their trays and so forth? For small folders a tackle box tray can slove a good number of organization problems.

I prefer the knife rolls with individual pockets to those with bands. I've used the Sack-Ups type knife carriers for about a year and they work quite well.

I just use bar towels, they are about 12" wide x 3 foot long, fold them in half length ways( ie 6" wide x 3 foot ), then sew straight lines about 2" appart. It takes about 2 minutes on a sewing machine, the towels cost next to nothing and it hold up to 20 knives.

I collect mostly slippies, so the knife rolls work best for me. I have 4 that are pretty full, and I just bought 3 more. It's a nice way to keep them sorted out well, especially if you collect alot of different makers. Easier to transport them as well, IMHO.

well, the united cutlery knife roll is on backorder,
so maybe not til next week can i order it.

but given all the good options people are posting up,
i may just change my mind..
the pvk case is looking very nice.

I've got a few bags with additional inserts that 1sks offered early on in the BFC days. Nice bags. I'd like a few more but they apparently didn't sell well so BFC discontinuted them. Cheaper than PVKs version but similar.

I have two of Bill's custom cases - they are like the benchmade one that they show on their website.

very nice - and good to travel with in case you ever need to travel with 12 knives. :D

I just have my knives layed out on an A/V stand next to my bed. This gives me a whole big shelf to hold my knives. I also usually have a few others around my room, such as by the computer to play with as I work, and my EDC knives on my dresser with my other EDC stuff. Works well enough for me, though if I get many more knives I will probably need to think of some other way to store them.

I have been very happy with PVK's custom knife case.

I don't know how it compares with other possible options in price, though.
from the picture, it looks as if the knives' clips and upper handles will be touching when you close the case. are they staggered to prevent this, or perhaps is there a slip which goes in between the two halves of the case?
