..over time? If so, how to wooden bows compare with synthetic or metal bows? Laminated vs. single layer?

i make long bows and recurves and yes both fiberglass laminated and wood bows left strung will loose power and speed over time .. also depending on materials it was made with also play a big factor ..

what kind of bow is it and what was used for materials ?

One piece wood bows (self bows) will lose power over time. Old self bows can be dangerous. A properly made laminated bow might, but I see BEAR bows that were made in the '50s that are as good as new. I have a 1970 Blackwidow target bow that has not lost an ounce. A lot depends on how they were finished and how they are stored.

I have some of the Laminated bows that I made 25 years ago that still pull the exact same weight as Thad did when I made them.
The self bows I made 10 years ago pulls the same as I marked it the day I finished it.
I usually leave my bow strung all day when I'm shooting but un-string them at night in camp.
Glass backed laminated bows should be unaffected by being strung long term.
A self bow will loose a pound or two in the course of a long day of shooting, but should regain the pound after being relaxed for a night.

I try to leave the complicated stuff alone. I've got a couple of regular bows (some kind of crazy plastic looking things) I got from Sportsman's Warehouse forever ago. I have left them strung since i got them. They feel no different and it's been years. Still fast and accurate. Not little kids bows mind you. I mean the good adult bows. I tried the compound thing once. I bought a really nice crazy thing and tested it out. It "redesigned" my neighbor's fence and I decided to go with the regular stuff I was used to. I'm sure it's a learned skill, but I lost interest after that first shot. I admit I don't know much about bows. Just giving my basic opinion. Mine still rock the house just fine. My buddy Ryan borrowed one of them from me during bow season and brought back a good size deer. He said it was a really good bow for what it was.
