Hi, i stripped my izzy and now she has a ruff finish, it almost looks bead blasted and anodized...
BTW why has the ESEE fourms blocked Registration? i forgot my password,:o
Thanks guys

when I stripped my eskabar I saw something similar.. I would guess to provide more surface area to make it so that the coating grips better to the blade.

The knives are left rough because it's cheaper then finishing them. It doesn't really make sense to put a nice finish on a knife you're just going to paint anyway. Most companies that coat their blades do the same thing. I stripped a couple of swamp rats that were much uglier under their coating then the Izulas I've done.

Also, the ESEE board has never had open registration. You have to write Jeff. There's a sticky that--oh wait. No one reads those. :D

cool guys, like i said it almost looks anidized (spelling=Bad)lol
i can see goldish colors and a little purple.
thanks!

That's probably remains of heat treatment discoloration, I'm guessing. Could be wrong though.

The two izula's, the esee 4 and 6 I stripped all had fairly smooth finishes underneath. But it just looked like gray carbon steel. Running my finger pad down it, I can't feel bumps, etc. Not polished by any means, but smooth enough.

What did you use to strip it?

And did you just set it to air dry? That gold you see could be rust. The first izzy I stripped I stupidly just left it out to air dry (maybe patted it before air) and that sucker discolored pretty fast. Could be a patina with a black/dark purplish color. Ended up doing vinegar soaks right after I stripped the rest to get a thin layer of protection. Gave the other Izula to a friend that polished the blade to mirror, looked pretty cool.

I've got a "sterile" (uncoated unengraved) Izula and it came just looking grey. It's now pretty shiny just from repeated hand polishing.

From what i have read, a number of the coatings require either a 120 grit bead blast or 600 grit sanding to help the coating to stick. If the plain blade is gray, they may have etched lightly in order to give ti a little rust resistance.
