Do I attempt to fix this on my own or send it in to CRK?

I broke the tip of my sebenza cutting some tape at work the other day, and I can't decide if I should attempt to resharpen on my own or let CRK take care of it. I have an edge pro with chosera stones an I consider myself to be efficient at knife sharpening. Let me know what you guys think, I am nervous about removing too much steel, but I'd also rather not lose my sebbie for over a month!

With my mediocre proficiency at sharpening, I'd have to remove material from the spine to fix that.....if it was MY knife, I'd have to send it in.

That's why I bought backup CRK's, wouldn't want to be without for any length of time.

That was my thought as well and I would hate to remove steel from the spine and be left with a very steep bevel. I think I will send it in, looks like my small insingo will have much more pocket time!

My small Insingo has a small crack in the blade, it's going to kill me to be without that knife for awhile.

That would most likely sharpen out with some use over time and resharpening.

It certainly will. My oldest SpyderMilitary had more of the blade tip broken, and over the course of a few months of use and sharpening, one couldn't even tell it was ever broken.

But on one of my beloved CRK's? It would drive me nuts.

Bummer! But since it's just a blade change, there's a chance it might get back to you fairly quick.

You have good sharpening kit, I'd just sharpen that right out. I did something similar to my main user small sebenza, and fixed it myself. It's a great way to get very comfortable with using it for lots of borderline inappropriate uses. :)

If you ever decide you want it restored, you send it in for spa treatment and fork over the $130 for a brand new blade.

That is a 5 minute fix on a stone. There is no need to remove material from the spine for a little reprofile job like that. :) You will just need to bring the belly of the blade up to the point and then just give it a quick regular full edge sharpen to clean it all up and get it uniform.

I pinged the point on an Umnumzaan when it lost a fight with a tilled floor. :foot: The lost point on an Umnumzaan is easier to sharpen back as you have a swedge (one reason a swedge is great on users IMO) but you get the idea.....

Thanks for all the input guys! Capt. Spaulding the tape was wrapped around cctv wires so I don't know if the tip of the knife got into the copper or what but I was pretty surprised to find as well. Haze and others I'm going to try and sharpen it out over the next few months and if I'm still not happy with it I will send it in for spa and pay for a new blade. Thanks, I'll update with after the sharpening bench!

And thanks for that link Haze! Confidence that I won't end up with a different knife after the chip is sharpened out.

I think it's never going back. It'll be a user, but not a hard user, and I cannot imagine the blade ever snapping.

You're probably right, but to be honest, I'd still send that one back. It's unlikely, but possible that blade is defective. They don't just crack like that normally. I'd hate to see the bite that could take out of your hand if it is bad, and decided to let go the one time you put some pressure on it.

Ah ok. That makes more sense.
