Do I buy pay for a semi custom knife I didn't order?

I ordered a semi-custom knife from KnivesShipFree. It is a Bark River, but.............. It has G-10 scales instead canvas scales like I ordered. I originally decided not to buy it, because money became unexpectedly tight and it wasn't the handle material I ordered. $300 for a knife they ordered wrong just wasn't going to happen. But now I have the money and I could easily buy it.

Now KnivesShipFree is emailing me asking me to buy it. My biggest concerns are that G10(matte) is worse than Canvas(matte). Is it? Does anyone know what the grip is likely to be when wet? And if I drop a rock on it in 20(f) weather will it chip? I ordered Canvas(matte) for it's grip when wet and I believe it has some flex to it and it not likely to chip when frozen(I winter camp). Are my concerns unfounded?

Would you buy this knife if you were me?

All in all my experience is that G10 is more rugged than canvas (micarta?),tougher, but there is a slight benefit with the canvas in the wet.the only big difference is that the G10 is in the same volume slightly heavier, but for all type's of weather they are equally suited,it's your own pefference,i think.hope to helped you a little!

Did you buy this knife and then send it back? Looks like you bought a knife and sent it back because you did not like the handle material.

As retired01 said, the difference between micarta and g10 in BF knives us slight. Some like the feel of micarta over g10.

Have you called KSF and asked them? They are pretty knowledgeable.

Mike

$300 is not too much for a knife but it is too much for a knife that is not what you ordered.

G10 should last longer than Micarta and will shed off the effects of water and cold better. Do you like the grip feel of G10? I do but you might not. I can't say but I'd think you will. Performance wise it shouldn't let you down but you should get the knives you want or chances are you won't bond with it properly. :)

G10 is tougher, more durable, more grippy, more chemically resistive than Canvas.

But Canvas isn't bad.

Regardless of the price, if it's not what you ordered, why not send it back?

As already suggested, call KSF, they're good ppl.

It doesn't sound like he received it or paid anything for it because it was a pre-order.

I prefer the G10 over micarta but I don't have experience with both in a cold weather scenario like you plan to use it. Was this on the Fox River II or a previously released model?

I like both g10 and micarta. I think I slightly prefer the g10 though. Sometimes is comes down to aesthetics rather than function.

I'd say if $300 makes that much difference in your budget - you can't afford a $300 knife.

You ordered a knife, but they want you to pay for a knife you didn't order. Easy fix is email them back and tell them you will gladly pay when they have the knife you ordered.

It looks like all of Bark rivers handles have a smooth finish to them.
In that case the micarta will most certainly have more texture to it and therefore be a better grip when wet or in cold temps.
I don't mean to disagree with the majority here; however G10 is only grippy when there are surface textures cut into it.
The only way for micarta to lose it's grippiness is if you polish it.

If you drop your G10 handled Bark River knife on a rock and the handle is damaged, send it back for a repair and 'spa treatment' and it will come back like a new knife. Shouldn't be necessary though, G10 is extremely durable.

You can order them "matte" if you want a rougher finish.

BRKT, in my experience, designs their handles to be grippy whether textured or not, thanks to the shape and contour of the handle. I've been using a Bravo 1 for a long time and it's worked well whether dry or in a river.

G10 will be heavier, more slippery(especially when wet), and scratch or at least show scratches more easily then uncoated(matte) canvas micarta. The top layer of Micarta will get dirty more easily and get wet with blood or sweat but, is easy to clean and offers a far more grippy surface(especially when wet) then G10. I prefer canvas micarta overall for its better grip with the same amount of texture. Also, I find colored G10 can scratch rather easily when worn on a belt and used hard. Also, it is rather slippery if a very aggressive texturing isn't added.

I think either handle would be fine. But if its not what you want then it really doesnt matter. I like the look of micarta but i prefer g10 in a user. But being a brkt i think you really cant go wrong.

It is completely up to you. Not sure how the G-10 vs Micarta thing happened--sorry about that.

If you would rather not get it, Not a problem. If it doesn't speak to you, it might be a good one to pass on.

I like G-10. But you ordered the knife a certain way, and honestly you will probably never like the one you settle for.
Get the one you originally wanted.
Best of luck.

Post of the month!
