Do I have a non-standard Kumo sheath?

Did Spyderco change the sheath for the Kumo?

All of the online photos that I have seen show a sheath that extends up and around the lower portion of the handle:
Picture From Spyderco Online Catalog

I just received a Kumo and it has a shorter sheath that stops at the handle.

Is this a new standard? Old? Special?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

That's not the way either of the two I had were set up. Looks different.

Not sure if it's a mistake or intentional. How's the retention in the sheath? That looks like it's easier to get your hands on the handle to extract it, but if the sheath isn't tight, I'd send it back.

That's weird. My Kumo sheath grips past the hand guard flares (which look like they're the main point of retention).

Interesting. It sounds like this sheath is not standard. It must be a prototype model or a brand new model. Maybe I will post this question on the Spyderco.com forum and see if anyone knows?

Thanks Planterz and Scott,

Does it still retain the knife inside the sheath (I mean, does it fall out or not)?

I'm wondering the same thing. If it still holds the knife well, I think yours is the better sheath. Leaves more of the handle open to grab.

We did make a change to the sheath for the Kumo. SAK, what you have is the newer version, the change was simply made for production reasons, nothing to do with any previous issues from ELUs.

Hope this helps.

Well... I hate to say it, but I would never EDC this knife with this sheath. It is not held securely enough for my taste.

Does it rattle around in the sheath? - No. However, if I turn it upside down and give it 3 or 4 hard vertical shakes with abrupt stops it falls out every time.
If you were carrying it on your belt and jostled the handle about a dozen times then it would be ready to fall out. (I have experimented - when bumping the handle from side to side (parallel to your body) it works its way loose after about 12 alternating bumps. I can see where normal activities and body movements would achieve looseness after awhile). In my opinion, this would not be safe to carry.

I want to be clear that this is only what I see on my particular sheath. I have no others to compare to. Maybe I just got a bad one.

Well that doesn't sound good. I like the new positioning of the sheath, because it exposes more handle, but it looks like in your case it may slightly defective. You gonna send it back? Or try and tighten it yourself?

I am not going to try and tighten it myself.

Maybe I am just expecting too much from my sheath. It would be interesting to hear feedback from someone else with this style sheath.

Well, I don't have that new style sheath, but the old one is like a vault. The knife will not come out unless you pull it out.

SAK,
We haven't had any other reports of issues with the newer sheath. I would encourage you to send it in to W&R and let us take a look.

It was probably changed to keep the price point the same. I bet the early sheaths were made to each knife, since the handle wrap may differ from knife to knife.
Now everyone will be looking for the early sheaths, it will be a collectiable item. :)

I have exactly the same problem. I saw the 'old' sheath before purchasing. I bought my kumo on ebay, came with new sheath which does NOT retain knife. Two or three shakes, or try running with it while inverted inside suit coat pocket, and it falls out. I"m not a happy camper.
