atfer getting out and trying my bk2 on some cutting and chopping chores, nothing heavy i inspected the edge to see how it did, i came away with 2 things....

the end held sharp very well no nicks or anything, it performed good....

but, the factory edge has me a little worried, is there any real reason why (i'm going to call the factory edge the uncoated area) the uncoated area is uneven?

on the marked bk2 side of the blade it is .080
on the bk&t side of the blade it is .040

these measurement are pretty close, i'd give or take a couple thousands maybe....

but why would it be so different, it makes my edge looks like this....

/\ - this wont line up correctly in the real post....sorry**

that might get the idea across, i will try and post a pic but i dont know if i have a camera good enough, or the camera skills to take a pic of this.

so my edge is more to one side than the other

Nope, nothing wrong at all. There is a small amount of human error involved with the manufacture of these knives, and as such, sometimes the grinds on those bits can be a bit off. they are ground by a person after all. If you use a sharpening system it will work out fine, and if you hand sharpen it will work out fine. If you are very particular and something that small bothers you, well, you can give Kabar a call and anyone there will be more than happy to help you get it switched out for a different one, but as someone that has used the heck out of theirs that I can guarantee has a worse grind, it doesn't hurt anything at all.

What Derek said. Uneven edges happen sometimes. I usually reprofile my edges first thing. I use a guide system and make them match. There are two things I don't worry about, factory edges, and out of the box sharp. I usually change one, and in doing that, change the other.

I was talking to a guy at KME sharpeners (review coming :D), and one thing we both had a laff about is how most folks think a knife is as sharp from the factory that it can get. With some time, and some use, you'll forget about it. No worries about that edge, wear it out, and put a new one on it.:D

fair enough, i got a good day of chopping out of it and tried it out i got some pics coming, i was just worried that it was an uncommon thing

Well, it is actually. I've heard of it a few times, on these hallowed forums, but in relation to the number of BKT knives sold, maybe 1% have had this problem? Maybe 2%? Consider the thousands of BKT's sold this year alone, if just 10 have a bad grind, or even 100, thems low numbers and quite uncommon. But, its not an issue unless you want it to be. :D

Last I heard, Beckers are sharpened by hand using power tools. Sometimes a person doesn't get both sides even, even I sometimes don't. The question is, does the knife cut? If the answer is yes, then there is no problem. An edge that isn't ground even might not look as pretty as an even edge, but after some use, you probably won't even notice. Enjoy the BK2. I've used mine to whittle some sticks, split some wood for the fire and slice up some cardboard boxes. Even though it's a heavy beast, it still cuts pretty well.
