I dont know how old it is...it has the 'newer improved' plastic clip. My question though is based on the fact that it has an AUS-8 blade.

It was made around '98 IIRC. The original clips were thinner & would supposedly break off.

IIRC Integral clips were discontinued in 1997, they switched to metal clips in 98' and then the barrel bolt type clip later that year. Enduras started out with Gin 1 steel and at sometime switched to AUS-8 (95?), all this info comes from the spyderco story which has been known to be wrong in the past.
Cheers,
Rob

Hi Enduraguy,

The clip was modified (mold change) 6 times during the life of the plastic clip versions (1990 - 1997). All in an effort to keep the integral clip functional and strong. In the end, we changed back to steel clips.

Steel was Gin-1 (called G2 in the early days). There was a period when Gin-1 wasn't available from the foundry so we did a few runs with AUS-8.

Screw in metal clips were only used as replacements on these pieces when we had a break.

We went to the steel clip with the barrel bolt in '98.

We also worked with ATS-55 for a while which was a special steel alloy that Hitachi made for us. We were also testing VG-10 at the time from another foundry (Moran model). After several years, the market preferred VG-10 so we moved production to VG-10 on most models.

"Oddballs" can be common with Spyderco. We make changes as we invent/discover them so there is usually not a time schedule. If we learn that the smaller jimping, for example. is preferred on the spine, we'll shift the model based on production runs, not the calendar. Many of our dealers don't like it and it causes Joyce complications in the catalogs, but the customer (ELU) gets the most refined model sooner.

The new Endura4 has all of the "improvements" requested from our customers and is the most "evolved" version.

We are also planning to add the Endura4 with Hitachi's ZDP-189 particle steel later this year.

Please put it on regular production line. NO SPRINT RUN, please.

I am glad to see this! Especially considering that it will be a regular production run! Handle color is good too.

Sal,

Will this be straight ZDP or cladded? Also, is it going to totally replace VG 10, or will it be an upgrade option? (I vote straight ZDP)

Thanks Sal for the good news. :) You know we like the ZDP blades! Joe L.

I got one out of Gin-1, and the clip is snapped off. I knew what it was and the serrations were perfect and unused. Course I traded my E3 for it. Now I have a slip joint endura gin-1. Lock up is done. I wish there was a "bang head" smiley. Thought it be something neat when I'm new to knives and thought it was old.

I would love to see a full spyderedge with a wave, but maybe that's just me. Either way, I'm still gonna get one.

I like the idea of a green E4 in ZDP-189. That it is a production run is even better. Thanks Sal.

Oh my God, put this in the Bombshell thread!

Green ZDP E4, I'll be all done buying knives.
