Do I need a handle?

I intend buying a long angle lathe file just for draw filing. Thanks to the member called Grapevine for post 10 in the thread called Recommendation? - Hand Files where I learnt of the suitability of a long angle lathe file for this purpose.

I see no reason for buying a separate handle for this file as it will only be used for draw filing. Is my reasoning valid?

Thanks.

Scott

I have many files and 2 or three interchangeable handles that can attach to most of them. Occasionally for a small amount of light filing I won't bother attaching a handle. For significant material removal it is much better with a handle.

Richard338: Hi Richard. Thanks for mentioning your interchangeable handles. Having just checked I already own a handle that will fit the long angle lathe file. So I shall order it without the handle. I am pleased I asked the question.

Update

I have just learnt that the seller of the long angle lathe files also sells hand finishing files. These appear identical to the long angle lathe files but for the ridges reaching right to the tip of the file and being available in finer cuts. Is there any advantage in buying a hand finishing file instead of a long angle lathe file? Thanks.

You can't have too many (good quality) files. I keep collecting them and one or another is best for a given task.

Buy them all, try them all

Only you can figure it out.

Put handles on them all.

I second what K Ken H> said. If you can get free golf balls somewhere, they make great handles.

If you have to buy golf balls, just buy handles, they are better.

When I was a kid-back in the caveman days, golf balls had a liquid-filled center. Have they changed?

The old ones had a small liquid-filled ball in the middle, covered by rubber bands.
The liquid was nasty.

I remember those old golf balls, the new solid golf balls make pretty decent handle for files.

a few of my files have deer antler handles
