Do I need a Para when...

...i already have a ffg delica frn and a military? i'll say 'yes' for now to avoid cheeky replies in this forum. that's because, yes i do plan to get one someday. :D but i have to post a number of comments just to let people how i feel about this fine knife:

1. it's an edc/utility knife the way i see it. the only advantages the delica might have over it are easier carry (due to smaller size and lower weight) and perhaps greater social acceptability due to the frn delica's somewhat low-key appearance.

2. the blade thickness and handle design of the para scream "tactical" to some people but in that aspect i find it falls short --literally. i handled one just yesterday (para2 w/ s30v g-10) and it has a disappointingly short blade. and it's very light. i understand the original para has an even smaller blade. the g-10 handle gives one lots of comfort and the lock-up is solid. but somehow i feel i don't have enough knife in my hand, especially in an emergency. or is it due to the fact that i already have a feel for the bigger and heavier ti millie? i also have to mention that i spent my younger years flipping a 6-inch balisong and toting a 7.5-ounce buck 110 with me to the field.

i have mixed feelings about the para's dimensions, to be honest. i feel the military is THE go to spyderco knife. i'm even considering getting a police 3 in g-10.

3. the things i like about the paramilitary are the thick blade, the large hole, and the edge profile. i believe this knife will shine as a hard use utility folder.

this brings me to the problem that's been bugging me the last few days: pricing dilema. to explain, i mentioned in another thread that i'm bent on buying either an endura or a stretch, either one in zdp 189. these are expected to satisfy my need for more blade of the scary-sharp variety. but either of those two in zdp already costs as much or more than an s30v para. of course, i can get a para with a better steel but that will bring it up to pricing with the military (the titanium kind.)

sorry for sounding weak and helpless guys. i really thought two spydercos would leave me satisfied. they don't. :(

Heh, fifty-two will still leave you wanting more. I have already bagged my limit on the Para, but I can tell you that the ZDP-189 Endura is one hell of a working man's knife.

I'm sure the majority of us here don't "need" another knife. :D

Want and need are entirely different things though. ;)

LOL this is basically the exact opposite thread I had going about needing a delica. Since you helped me decide that I did in fact need a delica ffg I will help convince you that you need a pm2. Its really a fantastic knife in use. Yes, the blade could be a bit longer, but I find that the short blade and long handle really comes in handy for control cuts such as opening boxes as well as keeps the knife a bit more PC. It isn't a small knife, and its not really a big knife, but it carries like a small knife and cuts like a big knife. Its almost like its the biggest of the little-big-knives, full sized handle with a nice size blade for edc.

Oh and 2 spydies is never enough...I just ordered my 12th and I'm already drooling over that ti chaparral and the upcoming brad southard flipper.

well now that i've handled one, i can understand why people regard it as what a delica should have been from the start. if i buy one, it'll definitely be a user. just keep your prices steady, spyderco!

You are the only one, who can tell if you need Para2. IMHO Para2 is better EDC than Delica or Military. I need choil on my EDC and Military little too big for my taste. But I will take Caly3.5 over any of them.

It seems to me that the Military is more than the Para 2 in almost every way. The Para would be appropriate if you wanted or needed a smaller knife, but sounds like you have no problem with the size of the military. You might like a G10 military to save a little weight, and maybe one of the sprint colors would be less threatening.

Caly 3.5or Police g10 are probably better choices than Para!Para2 is amazing knife but just too bulky for me to carry.Police g10 is what i like!

If the military suits you, then no, I don't think you need a para. Gives up blade and handle length, without giving you a noticeably smaller feel in the pocket. It will fall short of the Millie every time. However if the Millie is just too big for you, the Para might be perfect.

Also I vastly prefer the ergos of a well done liner/frame lock over the compression for constant use.
