Do I need fiber?

I see people talking about carbon fiber, and I see that Newt Livesay has some non magnetic fiber models.
Does anyone know if these blades are less detectable to a metal detector? (I'm not sure how a metal detector does what it does).

Are these blades impervious to rust? Are they durable?

Anyone have experience with blades like this? Who besides Newt makes them?

Knives made from carbon fiber, G-10, lexan, zytel, wood, or plastic are invisible to a metal detector. None of these will rust, although some, like wood, are more subject to corrosion than others. None are as durable as metal, or we would switch to them full-time.

I understand knives made of these undetectable materials are now illegal in the People's Republic of California, and probably in the Commune of Massachusetts as well, as are knives disguised as other items, like pens or canes.

Knives made of brass/bronze, iron/steel, cobalt/talonite/stellite, aluminum, or titanium will set off a metal detector.

Do a search on metal detectors. This has been covered at least a dozen times.

An update is that the newest passive scanners use the 1mm. wavelength natural body radiation, and can (and do) scan EVERYTHING. Walt

Some friendly advice...
Don't be too concerned about what shows up on metal detectors. If you need to carry a knife, use one with a "reasonable" length, NO SERRATIONS (they'll give you the serrated knife with your meal, but they freak out if you bring your own)
If you try to sneak something past security, eventually you'll find yourself in a heap-a-trouble. Carrying a non-metallic knife just so you can get past a metal detector is asking for grief.
Do a search for "airport" and you'll find out what's allowed and what's not.

After all, you're not gonna need the knife to foil a hijacker. Those guys have guns or knives and they get very irritated when someone confronts them with a knife.

Off to search for a non-metallic chastity belt, so's I protect myself from rape in the sky,

VG, that's good advice, I've read somewhere about a guy that never took his own knives when he traveled but when he reached his destination he just went and bought a cheap Chicago Cutlerly knife to carry in the car, depending on where he was working if he needed some type of protection or security there, when he was ready to leave...just threw it away.

Whew, what a relief. I read the title of this topic and thought we had a badly constipated knifenut on our hands.

Now for the knife content- check out John Ferguson's site at Chief's Cutlery. He makes some carbon fiber knives to order.
