Do I need lube or better technique?

Thanks for the resounding welcome in the earlier thread!

Here's the question - it seems that my BM 43 is not moving as smoothly as it did when I first picked it up. I notice this especially when executing horizontal movements such as the basic horizontal opening shown on Clay's site.

Do I need to lube the washers on the handle pins in order to get these handles sailing again? If so, is there a way to do this without a torx driver? Also, will Rem oil work fine for this task?

Thanks all!

Matthew

Almost everyone will agree that a little lube goes a long way. I use White Lightning. It's kind of a bike wax-based lubricant that cleans as it lubes. Chuck swears by Militec-1 as do many other forumites. Check either one of those out and you'll be more than happy.

Rem oil is considered a good knife lubricant too. You might give it a try. Militec-1 is a very thin liquid. It will run right down into the joint. There's no need to disassemble the knife to apply it.

I used Rem oil for a while but recently gave it to my little brother as I have no need of it. The other forumites talked me into getting a bottle of Miltec-1 and it is great.

Thanks Chuck. I gathered from the link that bloodyknuckles provided that the knife would not need to be disassembled to lubricate, but it is relieving to see confirmation from the man himself ;)

Looks like I might want to pick up a bottle of Militec, and use Rem oil for the time being. I saw that I will need a solvent before applying the Militec; saw also that you recommended a circuit board cleaner. Would isopropyl alcohol and compressed air be just as good? That's what I used to use to clean flux off of circuit boards...

Thanks again,

Matthew

Starfish, a product named "Gun Scubber" is good for the pivots. Do NOT use it in a closed room. If you use alchol, use "pure" alcohol. Other common alcohol has water in it. Tuner cleaner works but the good cleaner was banned. Rem oil works fine. WD40 works fine although others here don't like it. Never used Miltech, can't comment on it. Haven't tried any of the "dry" lubricants, can't comment on those either.

Thanks for the help - I put a few drops of Rem oil into the joints last night and cycled a few times. Bali is swinging better than when I first got it last week!

Thanks again!

Ok.., I'll be the dummy :) For a really well made Balisong.., without the need for "break-in" when you take it out of the box. I don't really notice a difference in any of the high quality lubricants.

Militec-1 is absolutely superior for Balisongs for all the reasons we've seen mentioned. However.., I don't use it initially on a Bali that swings cleanly right out of the box. I just swing 'em until they feel like they need it.., and then go through "the process".

I do use Militec-1 on all my FHM's now exclusively.., and it's made a significant difference in breaking in any new ones.
