Do I need to start carrying this folder?

Don't know anything about the knife but I would say if you can get it sharp carry it, a lot of the old pocket knives are so used and ground down that the edge geometry is shot and they don't take a good edge. Good luck finding some better information

If you like it, carry it. If you don't...don't. Hardly rocket science, in my opinion.
 
If you find one you like, buy it. I don't care if you have to go into hock. Heck, I have to fight every month, trying to scrape up enough cash, or sell something so I can pay the monthly "knife" bill. Usually, I sell stuff so I can buy new stuff. Not a bad thing.
 
If it's 15 years old it should be an old American made Schrade. The tang stamp should say something like Schrade+ U.S.A. and then the model number. The new imports will have the Uncle Henry signature and then Schrade under that. I'm sure that there's many variations on both of these stamps, but most of the ones I've seen have one or the other.
