what in your guys opinion is the largest blade you would ever need in order to field dress any animal in north america. i had no problems dressing a 350 lb bear with a 4'' blade but then i hear people refer to it as a good knife for small game? anyway id like your input thanks

I don't understand why some people need anything longer then 4''. I'm a moose, deer and bear hunter in north america and always used a knife between 3'' and 4'' to field dress and it is more then long enough IMO

You can dress nearly anything with a blade 3 inches or even shorter with no problems. I just like them a little longer because it keeps the peanut butter off my knuckles when I am making that sandwich for lunch. Make mine a 5 inch blade from squirrels to elk.

When I hunted all of the time, I dressed out every species in NA and more with a Buck 110. Four inches is plenty however I can live with a 5 inch as well. Nothing wrong with a bigger knife if you don,t mind the added weight.

When man was in the 'stone tool age", he skinned absolutely everything with a 2" flint and had no problem.

My personal preference is 4 -5 inches, but that is only a preference. Rat RC-4, Bravo 1, Fallkniven S1............knives in that general size range are generally what appeal to me for most cutting intensive tasks.

I've never used anything longer than 5 inches. And I have used shorter blades as well.

I prefer shorter blades around 3.5", no more than 4". My son likes them a little longer. for me the shorter blades seem to have better balance.

Sorther blades usually have better control. 3"-4" are good. Anything above that is excessive and makes thing harder. Sure Bowie and other big knives are great utility but definately not for treating game.

I prefer knives that are around 7 1/2 - 8 inches overall. At that size it is very easy to control and I have a good feel of the knife. Within reason, it is more about the person doing the work, than it is the size of the knife imo. A 4 inch blade used correctly, will do everything that needs to be done on deer, elk, and bear... YMMV

A bigger blade does not mean that the task will be done faster because of the extra size. But then again, I'm very fussy about how my game is taken care of,
so I don't always do it as fast as others. But the end result is much cleaner IMHO.
